Why do you say keep away from WD40 ?
I’ve always used it and never had any issues.

Because it is used as a general purpose spray and specialist ones are better. Also on older bikes it can make some plastic parts brittle.
Also as it is a releasant it contains corrosive elements, much better with Duck oil or ACF 50 or ACS (cheaper).
A lot of people think WD 40 is some sort of magic spray that will cure anything. More myth than hit I reckon.
Piles…
Don’t actually know anyone who’s tried it on the old Farmer Giles. What’s more, it doesn’t say anything about it on the tin
ho ho ho .
just doing a clutch on an 08 griso . took 6 hours to remove s/arm pivot ! both s/arm bearings trashed by the time it was apart. lower pivot knuckle was ok cos it was changed recently …but the grease was nearly all gone .
You READ the instructions!
Yeah, I just wanted to check if it was OK to put on christmas trees, after all they are needle bearing
You failed to mention that you’re here all week, try the veal.
I think I’ll sit down now…
when I had my griso I re greased the rear shock and then fitted a inner tube to cover all points of rear shock .It worked a treat
Ayup Johnno lad, where’ve yer bin…
work,work,work ,
To be fair, this isn’t just a Mandello issue,
Back in the early 90’s I owned an FJ1200,and the club advice was if you bought new, to strip and grease the rear shock linkage immediately, as Yamaha didn’t bother doing it in the factory

Indeed a modern production line will be assembling supplied parts. Not sure what to make of this - clearly there’s a problem evident by seized bearings but equally these bearings should not require much grease.
I’ve seen forum pics before from untrained mechanics of needle bearings stuffed with grease and that is very wrong: the free space around “full complement” bearings should be about 20% grease and 80% air. Too much grease is as bad as too little, leading to overheating (grease hates heat and its lubricating capability is permanently degraded rapidly) or high starting torque and running torque to the bearings.
I think the problem lies in inadequate maintenance - not pointing fingers but the grease should be replaced when it is either exhausted or contaminated and I think that is what is not happening, adding too much grease occasionally is not the best substitute for replacing the correct amount regularly. Problem is MG does not specify how often to replace the grease and it is possibly not being done.

No it’s not that simple. I stripped mine at 3 years old, and there was adequate grease in all the needle roller bearings. Similarly I stripped the swinging arm bearings a year later and they were also fine. But others have looked at theirs at much shorter intervals to find both lots of bearings red with rust. Seems to me that some of these assemblies are being installed dry.
Power jet washers ?
Well anyone using a jet washer near bearings needs their head seeing to. Enough warnings about that have been on this forum over the last several years.
