To check the alternator disconnect the 2 yellow wires and connect them idealy with crock clips to a meter set for 200v AC. start the bike and you should get around 30v. at a steady idle.
you dont need to remove the alternator cover. the 2 bolts holding the reg rec mounting plate go to a threaded plate that is only stuck on the frame with a dry bogey so have some sht ready to remount that and you will burn your arm on the downpipes mo_biker2014-08-20 21:49:12
Thank you guys.I am a bit stumped at the moment.Having located and removed the regulator it seems to be necessary to remove also the plate on which it is mounted - in order to allow access to the wires and connectors. On my bike this involves removing the front crash bars but the socket head screws are a bit mangled (not by me) and refusing to move.Am I being a muppet or does this plate also have to come off? There seems to be very little room behind it to tackle it from the back or above.
remove the plate , for ease of access, remove the tank also. it just makes life easier to get to the connections behind the head-stock , for re-connecting the wires .
chewed screws holding plate on . deal with them now whilst you are there . don’t use button heads , use full size heads . you can grind them off if you want , they should bolt into a plate behind .
In the end I took it to my local biker shop where Tony fitted it in about half an hour - by removing the trim panels behind the tank and the steering head.So now it charges OK! BUT also there is a steady 2 to 3 amp drain on the battery even with everything turned off.Any ideas?Just about to head off to the V-Twin Rally - and disconnect battery after I arrive; might pack jump leads as well, just in case!Incidentally, Ed at Gutsibits reckons that my alternator is very similar to the “high output” conversion type (which will not fit my engine) and that, if anything is needed it will probably only be the stator of the alternator as the rotor does not usually give any problems - about £150 and in stock.
