lemans mk11 jetting or bigger carb

evening gents, ive put about a thousand miles on since top end rebuild loving every minute so thanks to all who chipped in with info however!  my name (russell t)  the t stands for tinkering and i cant help it, must find something to improve, so  these old 36mm pumper high tops are worn i can see the slides getting sucked towards the intake valve when bliping the throttle, quite noticeable wear on them slides.  Anyway this bike is a mk 11 with 950 conversion, are the standard mk11 jets / slides etc, and the carb itself up to the job or would 40mm flat tops suit the extra cc ? im thinking a refurb of these original 36mm will cost quite a bit  (x  2), slides are £50 plus each, im sure you get the point.
So refurb and re jet the existing carbs if needed to suit 950cc    cost?

buy new 40mm jetted to suit 950cc                         cost?

if any of you kind folk have done any of the above ,or any info on the above i would love to here it  regards russell t

I have 40mm pumpers & they work brilliantly on my bike, which is also a Le Mans mk2 with a 950cc conversion.
The biggest issue you will have is the sidepanels & filters. You will have to modify the sidepanels considerably to make them fit, assuming you’re not from the side of the fence that removes all the panels, battery etc from view & leaves a hole in the frame.
Here’s what they can look like if you take a bit of time modding the sidepanels.

that is one smokin hot bike, love that exhaust too. Thanks for the reply( I don’t want to call you grubby) so sir will do for now. Do you know the jet sizes and slide cutaway please ? , if I can raise the money I can get new carbs and get them jetted like yours
Was there a reason for you changing from 36mm to 40mm?
Also where did you buy yours?

kindest regards to you sir all the best russ

good evening gents, I replaced two very worn needles and atomisers in the dell 36s and noticed the two main jets are 155, too big? Still getting lots of coughing and wheezing on cold starts, is this the nature of the beast or is there a cure (pilot 60/ slide60/3 ? any input would be good, thanks in advance russ

PHF36 mains should be 140 -ish, if memory serves.

Ah, blurb:
Choke dia.: 36mm
Throttle valve (slide): 60
Atomizer: 265 AB
Main jet: 140 (tho mine came with 145 but maybe just an experiment by previous owner?)
Idle jet: 60
Starter jet: 70
Pump jet: 38
Needle: K5 (2nd notch)
Float: 10 grams

PS: quite possible mains enlarged cos of 950 conversion, but 155 still a bit too big possibly, try different sizes, say 145 to start. You need to feel how it goes tho to know whether it’s better or worse.

Concur Miko…the single plug head we have found to be a less efficient burn anyway…move towards stock jet sizes…see how it feels and do a plug chop if needs be…we still manage to find places where you can…

Hi, going off the thread slightly, i am considering doing the 950 coversion to my le mans 2, as for parts for this conversion, is it a case of using the pistons and barrels from a sp1000 and turning down the OD of the barrel to fit into the engine casing? or boring out the le mans cylinders as mine are cast iron but possibly then leaving the wall thickness too thin? Also what head gasket would you use because of the compression with the le mans head? cheers chris.

Usually it’s a 950 kit, 2 off new complete 950 barrels and pistons, rings, gudgeon pins and circlips, not sure if gaskets and O-rings would be included but would be needed also. I,.e. all spannering as far as I know. Not sure about the crankcase aperture aspect.

The head gaskets would be 950 (aka V1000) ones. With the advantage of added ‘squish bands’.

thanks gents, I thought it might be a bit big ,mk1 135 and mk11 140 as my recently found guzziology states. Any thoughts on all the coughing and such kind regards russ

Any chance of a recording?

hey mike, its in book form, that’s a shed load of printing!

I think he means recording the coughing !

I thought that too

Off subject, about 15 years ago Steve Orme borrowed my Guzziology and photocopied it at work on nightshift.
I reckon it would have been cheaper for his boss to cough up for an original copy.

On subject, about 18 years ago some went down that route on a track bike.
He found the 950cc conversion good but the 40mm pumpers a waste of time.
Ian Cobby had a go on the result and liked it.

Aye I meant the starting-up noise. Could just be ‘normal’.

sorry mike, my mistake  a recording might be beyond my asda £10 phone  im thinking the choke action doesn’t help,ie when held on she runs and warms as you would expect but it takes a good 30-40 seconds to stop spitting back and this has to be done at a standstill because it flips off automatically, maybe a lever operated choke like my old bonnie which could be turned off while riding? thoughts gents please

That’s why I put a h/bar choke lever on

Has it got wasted-spark electronic ignition?

it has newtronics ignition which I assume is a wasted spark, why do you ask?

I think the bonnie choke lever will be going on regards russ
