Oil drain plug

California Ev 2005 hydraulics tappet.
Have just finished MY first full oil & filter change
Nice of the manual to not point out the 4 long bolts holding the sump?
It’s OK learnt long ago if it isn’t moving find out why. I did.

My question is about the drain plug
Looks very fancy thought it might be a magnetic one, but no. After cleaning it and blowing it off with an air line, from the nipple like part in its centre there started to come out something that looked like gauze, more blowing and it all come out. I am now left with 3 small metal plates loose inside the drain Plug?
So have I blown out something that should be there and just what is it supposed to do Please.

Sure they are not magnetic as all the ones I have seen are. The V1000 of 1976 through to the 2002 V11 Le mans all have a magnet in the sump plug and on the V1000 the gearbox filler plug

Thanks for the reply. I have now pulled off the nipple and
put to one side it and the little plats.

I have replaced the drain plug out them.

My Plug may have been magnetic once but there was non evident
in my one, nor any thing clinging to it.

I feel a magnetic plug really comes into its own during the
first few thousand mills after that is just nice to have, there’s not much gets
past a modern cartridge filter.

I will look out for a PROPER magnet and see if I can incorporate
it in the drain plug as I am not impressed with the Guzzi set up.

Removing the sump to replace an oil filter did seem a bit archaic
and yes a lot of work for a service job.

But I have now seen one advantage. You do get to clean it
all out properly.

As there have been 67 views and only one reply I thought i
put up the replies I got from other Guzzi forms

in case it might be of help to others.

Thanks for the help

Regards Bill Dag

If you search here (probably hard to find), you will
fond that is common.
It is some form of plastic magnet is such crap, with metal plated on the sides.
Cleaning it out damages it. I think I JB Welded a real magnet in the hole on
mine.The plug is slightly
magnetic. What you blew out should be there. The end piece can be removed so
you have nothing that can come out and end up where it shouldn’t be. Earlier
models (V700, Ambassador, and Eldorado) just had the plug without the magnet.
You can order a new plug if you want the magnet. In the future, just wipe off
the end of the plug with a rag if you get a magnetic plug.

When you think about it, a magnet will only attract ferrous particles. I am trying to think what ferrous particles you might get in a Guzzi sump.

Yes quite, as far as I can see the magnetic plug is just an extra back up, to hold onto any particles and therefore remove them from the sump oil, but yes even then only if they’re iron based. While it’s true the filters should prevent swarf type stuff circulating, don’t forget though that metal particles will fall down from the top of the engine into the sump with the spent oil, the filters won’t stop that. Still a bit bemused what this plug is like, I only know the all-metal Tonti version which have never been any trouble AFAIK, and no plastic bits. (?)

Thing is if it does catch rubbish , that said never had anything on the sump plug but always some minute on the gearbox one, But the V1000 has doen a fair few miles

Yes, in a gearbox you have lots of steel parts bashing into each other, so ferrous swarf is inevitable.

Once had a Mini that always left a pile of filings in the bottom of the draining off pan at every oil change, still kept going though.
