1980 V50 Potential Purchase

A good friend of mine with a small stable of well-maintained and fettled classic bikes is downsizing his collection due to age.

Amongst them is a 1980 V50, which I have first refusal on, once he can finally get around to saying farewell to it!

Is there anything that I should be particularly aware of? I know that it’s 45 years old, but just thinking of “red flags".

Thanks as always.

I’ve recently adopted a 1980 V50 which had not been as well.looked.after as your potential seems to have been

I have refurbished the brakes put the airbox/airfilter back together correctly but I discovered an issue with the ignition pickups, I am now having to rewire them as the existing wiring was banjacked, new ones are like hens teeth I’ve been quoted up to £300 each

Otherwise when it’s running I’m going to enjoy it

Best of luck

Put a Sache ignition kit on it,about £400

The front brake will be dreadful despite the fancy Brembo logos! Consider installing a later lever mounted master cylinder if it doesn’t already have it.

Non standard intake can cause issues as the air box is used as part of the oil breather system and these engines do breathe quite a bit of oil vapour.

The electrics can have issues but it’s usually just dirty contacts.

Mine leaks oil from the bevel gear box but from what I’ve read, this isn’t unusual.

Other than that, it’s a brilliant thing to ride and pretty solid and has loads of character.
