2014 Stelvio NTX poor low speed running

My Stelvio is the first vehicle I have ever named (Baby) and I largely did to wind up my family and because it is so inappropriate.

Dave from Finebau did contact me early on suggesting I try one of his units but I thought I had better get used to the bike first. 3000 miles latter I am definitely riding the bike better and the issues caused by the very lean mixture mandated on modern bikes seem less intrusive. That said I may well experiment with a Finebau unit or a change to the fuel mapping in future to try to return to the fatter, more flexible feel of a normally aspirated motor.

I love the Stelvio!

Richard

I wasn’t dissatisfied with the way the Stevio ran,but I’m always up for making an improvement if possible, and I think an improvement has been made.

Steve

I hadn’t noticed any hesitation or flat spot on my Stelvio whilst alternating between 95 octane and the odd fill of 98.

I haven’t put in 98 for a couple of months and now I’m noticing this flat spot and more detonation than before. Coincidence? Ambient temperature to blame? Or do these engines really need a squirt of 98 in the tank every now and then?

I’ll try 98 on the next fill and see if this makes any difference.

Any comments specific to the octane rating from others?

I was unhappy about the way my NTX was running (I initiated this thread) but two things have made a massive improvement, the use of Super petrol instead of Regular and ensuring the throttle cables are adjusted.

I tried (and discounted) one of the previously mentioned solutions but have found that with the better fuel and the cables correctly adjusted (dealer missed it on PDI & initial service) it now runs very smoothly and low speed snatching is eliminated.

Hi Litch,

Glad your Stelvio is now sorted. When you say cables correctly adjusted do you mean all slack removed from each cable as mentioned elsewhere in this thread?

Yours,

Richard

Not got a Stelvio, but one of the Finebau units completely cured my Norge 8v slow speed issues

Yes, that is correct.
What I hadn’t realised (and what the dealer missed on two occasions) was that the return cable was VERY loose, adjusting it to remove the slack solved most of the problems at a stroke.

I tried Super unleaded for 7-8 tankfulls and then reverted back to Regular for 3-4 and there was a very noticeable difference in the way the bike ran. It has now been on Super again for the past 3 tankfulls and it is running really well.
The different fuel doesn’t appear to make any difference to the fuel consumption (which is still pretty poor) but the difference in how it runs makes it worth while in my opinion.

Thanks Litch,

I will be all over those cable adjusters tomorrow and may even try a tank or two of 98 octane. (Not that mine is exhibiting anything like the problems you have described.

Enjoy your Stelvio! Yours,

Richard

me too

Hi everyone,

I have set up my suspension using the numbers Jon (Squarepants) kindly supplied. The handling and ride is much improved. I now realise the bike had far too much pre-load and was under damped - a combination almost equivalent to having no suspension at all! I bought my bike second hand but would not be surprised if it came out of the factory this way. I spent the afternoon deliberately riding over bumps to enjoy the new experience. I am slightly lighter than Jon and generally ride solo so I may reduce the pre load by another full turn at the front and a couple of clicks at the back. Didn’t get around to the throttle cable adjusters, It was the age old conundrum: ride it or fettle it? Ride it or fettle it?..Richard632014-10-05 21:03:29
