2014 Stelvio NTX

Mine is still returning 40MPG with general use which I find a bit disappointing. It creeps up to about 45MPG on a run but that it is.
As said before, these are actual calculated figures based on mileage and fuel used (brim tank every fill). That said, the MPG readout is still proving to be really accurate.

Is there not a breather in the tank? If you fill it brim full are you not losing some fuel out of the breather? Mine leaks a bit if I over fill it. Might be putting your figures out, just a thought

Have you tried going higher than 3rd gear?

I use the term “brim” to indicate that I fill the tank to the same level every time so I can work out an accurate consumption figure, I don’t literally mean I fill it to the point of overflowing.
There is of course a breather but I have only lost fuel out of it once and that was when I parked up immediately after filling and over the next couple of hours the heat of the (hot) sun on the black tank made the fuel expand resulting in a small amount of loss. In normal use I am riding the bike immediately after filling up so expansion is not an issue. As I have proved the MPG read-out to be very accurate, I know that the consumption is the same regardless of whether the tank is full or not.

Believe me I have played that gearbox!

Hi everyone,

Let’s not forget we have chosen to ride a bike that displaces 1200cc! If fuel economy was a priority we could have bought middle weight bikes in a low state of tune. I have no idea what the real MPG figure is for mine at the moment but will be happy enough for 40 MPG. My 2 litre ford focus delivers 25 MPG on the kind of short trip heavy traffic that is my lot!

Richard

Just to report that my dashboard MPG is turning out to be pretty accurate. It’s odd that when I had it set for KM (Litres/100km) it seemed to be somewhat optimistic!

Did some hooning around and a lot of London traffic on the last tank. It dropped to a shameful 46-47mpg! The good thing is that on a run, I know I can get it into the 50s again which is pretty good for the weight and size of the bike.

I can laugh because my Aprilia RS125 is thirstier…and that’s before I factor in two stroke at nearly £10 per litre ! The only comparable bike I’ve owned that was more economical than my Stelvio was another low tech air-cooled V-twin - Buell Ulysses.

Jon.

Hi Jon,

I don’t doubt a word you write but discussing MPG puts a smile on my face! I am always happy to save money on fuel but meanwhile I am spending money hand over fist on our obsession (sorry, hobby…sorry, way of life)!

Yours,

Richard

Haha - we focus on mpg but we forget the other far bigger costs; Tyres, servicing, depreciation, farkles, helmets, boots, leathers, textiles, gloves, insurance, tax, MoT & financing (phew)
When you take into account all of the above, getting another 2mpg shouldn’t be the gleeful experience it is…but it is!

Jon

Hi Jon,

You are so right. Just looking at the Stelvio (or my Cali Stone for that matter) canted away from me on its side stand looking like a cat ready to pounce down the road again shouldn’t make me smile… but it does!

Excuse me ignorance Jon, but what are farkles…

‘Farkles’ is a nickname for the, ahem, ‘essential’ bling we add to complete our bikes. Anything from exhaust cans to bar ends, the shinier the better.

I think the term originated from the US and may be an amalgam of the word ‘sparkle’.

Jon

Ah, thankyou…
