My 2017 V7 Stone started making a regular knock whilst riding
At a standstill in neutral if you rev the engine the noise is not there. The gear change also seems a bit stiff and I can’t find neutral with the engine running
Mileage is a little over 5k
Any suggestions or advice welcome this is my first Guzzi
stiff gear change might be the linkage needs greased, this happens to me every 12 to 18 months with a v85 depending on the weather, riding a lot in rain seems to be the issue.
it changes ok when saturated with rain but that washes the grease out so when it dries, next time out changing down gets sticky and eventually it will refuse to change down at all if not dealt with. changing up is less affected.
at Chris’s recommendation I have got some horribly sticky CV joint grease which I’ll be applying inside the bronze bushing soon, should resist the rain a bit better.
is the clonk occurring just after changing gear? possibly cush rubber perished in bevel box ?
The knock is there constantly I rode home and parked the bike until I can see what it is to avoid causing more damage

maybe the uj in drive shaft, if you put the bike on centre stand or an axle stand, and have bike in neutral, can you rotate the rear wheel freely with no clonking or does it feel like it’s turning a bit then feeling slightly stuck and making the noise?
Thank you Sid, I will try this at the weekend when I can get the bike on a jack. My paddock stand will not work with the bevel drive being in the way.
The saga continues I had the bike on the inspection table and jacked it up. The rear wheel rotated smoothly with no noise or notchiness. It has now started to make a loud noise when I put it in top gear. It sounds as if the gear has not engaged and the cogs are running against each other like a false neutral except the gear has engaged and there is no loss of drive. I think that I need to take the box out for further investigation. This looks like a pretty major disassembly and any tips are more than welcome.
Before doing anything check the level in the box and consider an oil change using this as it’s perfect for v7 or v9 Guzzi boxes. It’s in my v9 and the gears are a lot smoother and predictable since the change.
It’s used in articulated lorry’s that are hauling big loads over long distances so you know it’s one of the best for a Guzzi tranny
Finding neutral easily on these bikes is a known challenging characteristic but since using the Total oil mine is behaving better also
for bevel box too or just gearbox?
Thank you I will check that out before I do anything else
Gearbox as it’s highly unlikely to be a bevel issue at that mileage

Upon checking the oil levels in the box I found a needle roller so after much ado and frustration ie swearing the box was removed from the bike
The bell housing w a s removed to reveal a thick layer ofswarf and more needle rollers. The input shaft feels notchy and makes a loud clicking sound when turned, I can’t remove the output end case to see exactly how much damage has been caused. The case seems to be stuck
On the output shaft, yes I have removed the
ctrclip from the oil seal, but it is stuck fast so any advice welcome as I have been unable to source a workshop manual, only service manuals.

Difference between a mechanic and a technician
A mechanic can fix stuff!
have you tried some heat and gently tapping with a soft mallet? I seem to remember this working on a BMW airhead gearbox
