Hi all,
I have a dribble from my pushrod and the Guzzi is no different.
Gearbox oil is leaking from the pushrod hole even when the bike has been at standstill over night and the oil is cold.
I have purchased the six o.rings from Gutsibits and am about to start installation.
My question is; has anyone achieved this without removing the swingarm?
I may just take the fork off and use the opportunity to check and lube everything, but the sun is out - you know how it is?
Thank you
Mick
You can replace the O ring on the actuator mushroom with the swing arm in place. I did this on my Cali 3 a couple of years ago and it cured the slight incontinence.
Remove the actuator arm and the mushroom piece will pop out. Fit a new O ring and reassemble. Not a difficult job, but messy lying under the bike.
Thank you Don. I knew that you could do it in the frame but wasn’t sure if it could be done with the s/arm in place or if you had to go as far as crabbing the frame to provide enough clearance.
I am installing the six o-rings that go on the pushrod itself a la thisoldtractor.
Thank you again, I’ll report back when I have done it. Mick
I would try just replacing the O ring first, that cured my leakage and is a quick simple job that takes about an hour or two. Leave the bigger job till winter, if necessary .
You will not get the push rod out with the swing arm still in place, in fact you will probably struggle to get the push rod out as it is a way down the main shaft and there is a short piece behind the release bearing. This is the pushrod assembly from my 1978 SP1000 I replaced the cone seals with the same again .
Thanks again Don.
Had I read Guzziology before posting here I would not have been wasting peoples time!
I did take the swing arm off; took the outer body out and replaced the large o-ring, the thrust bearing disintigrated when removed so that was replaced. The inner body and pushrod came out ok. I replaced the plastic cylindrical oil seal (I see you have the 2 conical ones in you photo) with the six small o-rings.
I would love to know the best method for realigning the frame plates when putting the footrest hangers back on! I used a large screwdriver as a lever.
All back together, went for a test ride and all is well.
No oil on the garage floor now apart from that leaking from my T140s primary chain case, but thats for another day…
Good to hear you have resolved the problem. I seem to recall I left the bolts just in the holes to stop the frame sagging down, but a screwdriver works well if they do slip out.
My Guzzi’s share a home with a late Harris bult in Devon T140 and that also needs a drip tray as the main frame tube oil tank gasket weeps a bit. I did the push rod seals over the summer, there’s always something to do with one of them!
Thanks for this have exactly the same issue , as the shaft boot is perished will probably drop the swinging arm. Note I made a breather connected to the filler plug this made a big difference and there’s mention of pressure on the HMB web site thing they sell a breather. So perhaps a good mod regards Ratt
Happy to report that after more use the G/B oil is staying put.
If it is the same issue and you need to install the six o-rings on the clutch pushrod as well as the larger one on the outer body, the swing arm will need to come out. Its a good opportunity to grease everything and give things a check over.
Hope it goes well.
Interesting the mention of six small “O” rings on the clutch pushrod. I’m going back 25+ years now but recall only the two factory fit conical seals (pointing rearwards) which worked fine. Are the “O” rings an accepted later mod?
Richard
Hi Richard, yes, the 6 o-ring mod is a retrofit that I unearthed in Guzziology (great explanation) and on thisoldtractor.com (with photos). I found that even after greasing the o-rings they were still fiddly to get in and required quite a bit of force to get them fully home.
The two cones you mention were fitted to later bikes than my 850T and are featured in one of Dons photos in an earlier post. Mine had a single cylindrical collar about 20mm long.
There is also a single larger diameter o-ring on the outer body which I also replaced.
Cheers
Mick
