2013 V7 Special
I’ve been having an issue where the bike drops power at lower revs. It was happening fairly randomly so on advice I did the following…
- Changed fuel filter
- Changed plugs
- Changed plug caps to NGK ones
- Checked exhaust bolts were not too tight or lose.
Now the issue is much better. However, it still happens! Only now there’s more of a pattern to it: The bike rides fine from cold and once it’s warmed up, then, once I stop, turn it off and then start it again, the issue starts. (So basically when it’s warm and is re-started) it will be seriously down on power until I get to about 4000RPM, then it runs as normal.
Any ideas? Thanks for reading.
That sounds more like a fueling issue to me? Before anything else though have you checked your air filter? Throttle butterflies? Might try a plug chop and since they are new should get a good idea of colour?

I’m curious, what do you mean by ‘drops power’.?
Are you saying the engine gets ‘weaker’, or it suffers poor fuelling.?
My older 2010 V7 suffered poor fuelling at ‘tick over’, even when warm.
If sat I’d need to tweak the throttle advance (choke like lever) in order to stop it stalling.
When I first got it this would stall when rolling off the throttle, i.e when arriving and a junction etc.
Good thinking with the plugs, i’ll have a look. I think if it was a fuelling issue though it would present throughout the revs, or perhaps at higher revs rather than lower. The way it suddenly switches from not okay to okay feels more like ignition.
By drops power I mean the engine sounds like it’s running fine, it just feels VERY sluggish. Like I’m riding with the rear brake on or something. Then all of a sudden, once it reaches 4000rpm all the power comes back and it’s off like a stabbed rat!
My thought was more that it ran OK from cold..i.e. with richer mixture. If you were restricted on air flow, once the mixture thinned the some starvation?
At root it’s just fire. Fuel, heat and oxygen. If the airflow is good, butterfies and filter then it’s fuel or heat. Next check is if your new spark plugs are actually getting spark? The interesting question is why gets worse when everything is warm??
Wondering whether the throttle butterflies are sticking or need adjustment? That’s all I got!!
Thank you. All certainly worth checking.
