i guess “best place” is subjective. Personally I’d start with a phone call to Gutsibits, maybe Fowlers if you want to use UK suppliers… then Stein Dinse (as above) and Teo Lamers (TML). But watch for postage and duty from the latter two.
When do the Italians vacation? August or September? this affects supply times.
My friend is going to try and separate the 2 parts of the caliper tomorrow with a hydraulic press so it just depends if he can get them separated without destroying the caliper.
This is why I always have mine apart and greased ASAP even if bike is brand new. Saves so much aggro later. Learned my lesson with a second hand Piaggio X10, was wondering why I can’t turn the front wheel by hand even if jacked up, I’m not that weak surely?
Hi, just read this and I’d be careful with that hydraulic press? If not in a hurry I’d suggest remove all the calipers intact and leave them to soak in a basin of petrol or at least a good spray down with penetrating fluid left for a day or more then try tap, tap, tap around with a ‘light’ ball peen hammer and see what loosens up? A refurb kit if you can find one will be way cheaper than new calipers? Prolly get one for less than a tenner. Excellent time to blow the pistons out and a thorough clean, new seals etc. The pins are not a precision part really and might get away with some emery work but some refurb kits include new ones. Plenty good youtube vids out there on how to. It’s a really satisfying job to do but maybe you are happy starting with new?
Soaking in petrol is not recommended. The piston seals and the bellows seals around the pins are unlikely to be happy. Gentle compression in a vice or press with plenty of wooden packing would be my choice. 40 tonnes in a hydraulic press from the word go will be catastrophic. As soon as you have some movement it will go eventually and then you probably could do with new pins.
Just had a silly thought! (I do that a lot!!) I don’t know how old the bike in question is and I am new to Guzzidom but, I hope these are not monobloc M4’s?
A lot of my experience of bike refurbs has been on Nissin types for which you can replace all the seals and pins. On checking today I see that Brembo do not even give an option for refurb kits for the V85?? No option but replace the complete caliper? Jeez! I’ll be giving mine some serious TLC!
£85 for a 2022 caliper on your favourite auction site. But I am a cheapskate ( if the gentle application of a vice hadn’t worked on the bloody thing ).
I had the same problem when I was restoring a Ducati earlier this year. I couldn’t get refurb kits for master cylinders. There are some kits about, but not for modern stuff.
