Bevel Box Oil Seal

Looking for advice before leaping in !! I appear to need a new bevel box oil seal - I’m assuming its the large one.

  1. I’ve read that its put in ‘backwards’ i.e with the metal rim facing inwards - Is that correct ?
  2. How difficult is it to remove? If the metal rim is inwards theres going to be nothing to lever on - any tips?
  3. Also read about some seals having double lips - Sounds like a good thing - does anyone know specific details? part numbers?

I assume you are talking about the large seal on the bevel box. I have a feeling that I am going to have to do the one on my Spada soon as I’ve seen a bit of oil thrown out onto the rear wheel rim recently. As far as I am aware, oil seals are always fitted with the spring facing the oil.
This video suggests that it is fitted in the normal way.

You can get some double lipped seals and it certainly wouldn’t harm if you can get the correct size.

Yup, spring inside.

I have my Cali 1100i final drive in pieces at moment so I can provide pics of the internals, if you need them.

The cause of my pain is that Luigi didn’t get the pinion shimming correct. Which has lead to stress fracture in the pinion gear. Wouldn’t have noticed if I hadn’t checked the contact area with Engineers blue. The contact should be an oval patch in the centre of the tooth not a line across the top. Awaiting new gear set from Gutsibits.

Re-Reading Guzziology Its the smaller - inner seal which is put in teh other way round - That makes more sense

Hopefully its not that one because thats a lot more work as you have to remove a needle bearing to get to it.
