Bevel box pinion nut????

Ok folks…How the hell do you torque up the nut on the bevel box pinion bearings? Whats the best way to hold the box? I can get a deep reach socket on it but finding it hard to hold the bevel box(have it on the wheel with axle)

If you look in the o/e workshop manual it shows the correct tools for the job.
To hold the splined shaft you can make the tool from a old female coupling cut down to about 20mm long then weld a piece of flat bar ( 5 or 6mm x 20mm will do nicely)to it to make a ring type spanner. This makes a tool just like o/e.
To tighten the nut you need to make a tool from a 1/2" socket cut off the top( use a angle grinder) were the 1/2" square is so you end up with a straight through socket then weld a flat bar( size as above) on to it to make a ring spanner. This makes a tool just like o/e.
You cannot torqe the nut up with a torque wrench even with a o/e tool so guzzi must use a different set up at the factory or maybe not.
OR you could bodge it just as i have seen done both on this nut and the gearbox output nut and clamp the splined shaft in a vice / mole grips/pipe wrench. NONE of which have managed to tighten the nut up tightly. I have also seen the cold chisel methord as well

Have just reread my posting, and obviously got mixed up with the gearbox ouput shaft nut. Blame it on my age !You can tighten up the pinion nut with a spanner or a crows foot and torque wrench, but realy do need the tool to hold the spline.

I think I held the output spline in a set of soft aluminium jaws in my bench vice.

As per this?

Spot on .

Thanks guys. I managed to make a pinion holding tool by welding an old UJ and 1/4’’ drive, and tightening the nut with a ring spanner.
