My 2005 Breva 1100 has usual rattly clutch and a knocking from transmission in first gear, especially when cold.
It was like this when i bought it a year ago and have covered 5000 miles without incident. ( its now done 39k)
Thinking of stripping it and having a look to see what is happening and would welcome any tips or advice before i start.
I always do my own maintenance so not phased by the job but not sure what i will find inside.
Thanks.
This article relates to the earlier 5 speed boxes, but may be helpful to read as an intro.

Thanks for this, a it of bed time reading ! was hoping it was something to do with the clutch ?
The clutch on these bikes do rattle, maybe you need to compare it with annother bike to see if yours is unusually noisy or if it is a case of “They all do that sir”
Is there a Guzz club meeting near to you where you can compare it to another or get a second opinion? Where abouts are you based?
You may already have the Breva 1100 motor and gearbox manual, but if not, here’s a link to it:

FYI, our 120,000-mile 2005 Breva 1100 has the original clutch fitted and it’s still working as it should. It has always ‘rattled’ in neutral.
Thanks for this, very interesting. Its not the clutch that worries me its more the clanking in first gear when setting off.
My clutch rattles when i pull lever pulled in, no slipping though.
Jim
Have you tried changing the clutch fluid?
Mine felt better after changing (1200s), clutch rattles when it’s pulled in, quiet when it’s out👍
Phil
Jim, if not already inspected, I suggest looking at the reaction rod mounts, particularly the front mount. If the rubber bush is worn or the mounting hole in the frame lug has been elongated, this could be a cause of the clanking in first gear.
Yes, thanks. Checked linkage bushes, all ok. It is a loud clacking from gear box area.
Following on from this post, I have now removed engine gearbox to inspect. Clutch looks fine and gear box turns smooth.
One thing i noticed is that in first gear there is a lot of play between input shaft and out put. I can turn input shaft around 45 degrees before out put shaft turns.
Does anyone know if this is normal as i dont want to strip gearox unless i realy have to.
Thanks in advance
Sorry that should read 90 degrees
