If you are using the MGCGB marketplace you are required to provide those contact details, else who else will they contact? Use it or don’t use it
Tell them you work at your local police station and ask them to meet you there , ie just outside the main door -you will soon see if they are receptive… Don’t have the bike with you either when you meet and greet, chat to them for a few minutes to check the back story , like why this model ? Where have you come from ? etc etc then walk to your van or whatever you have with you for holding the bike safely, when you feel comfortable about them & they show they have the whereabout to pay, open up more and do the sell. I prefer pre agreed bank transfers discussed at the time of sorting the meet up, these transfers are normally instantaneous now -Oh, riding it for a test run ? Offer a pillion ride or avoid - if you do agree , bike Insurance - let them show you this and take a copy on your phone -take their driving license, van keys and a deposit and hold safely, the license, bike insurance, bank details , it should all match up with the purchasers info - check that group A on the back is valid … if they tell you they have a van for transport and no bike insurance, ask them to point you out their van - in the words of Paddy McGuiness “No bike insurance no ridy”
Finally -If deal done , cash in your bank or in your hand - then hand over the motorcycle with the keys last - I hold these back until I have done all the DVLA paper work. Never reveal your address, ( show the V 5 as your proof of ownership but not in detail ) if the transaction is not going to work out, it avoids an unwanted visit a few day later. Never, ever go alone either. Walk away if you get a gut feeling it’s not right …Walk through the Police station door as though you are returning to work. They will not follow you in - the desk clerk might enquire why you are there - then elaborate … most officers support crime prevention after all … if it does turn bad - well - you are in the right place after all !
To be fair I have bought and sold bikes via the club website, cash and bank transfer, you get a feel for what’s right.
I have had exactly the same from the same email address . Of course it is a scam! Until I get a cheque in the post and the cheque is cleared I will not think otherwise
I’ve also been pestered by these emails had 3 so far this week. Definitely scammers.
you can get a pre pay sim for under a fiver with credit on it for 30 days, use for selling online as a contact number then never use it again. if you have a phone that accepts eSIm you dont neven need to leave the house to do it.
buy it online, add to your phone, delete it when sales completed.
create a new email account named for each item being sold and you can keep track of every item separately, and your real email never gets spammed from it
the problem with this is I’ve wanted to buy items off marketplace and without any way to contact the seller its impossible.
having bought many items from it so far, everyone i’ve dealt with has been honest and accepted payment by paypal or bank transfer and posted promptly. most recently i got a package from our marketplace on wednesday, a day early in fact as it was expected thursday.
Hi nick yes I’ve had the same scammers contacting me that’s why I only sell with bank transfer or cash on collection. So far blocked three all g.mail. any genuine buyer will come and view first
I suggest you steer clear -as I myself have. I believe that both of those characters emailed me regarding my LeMans. Both sounded very dubious and when asked for phone numbers never heard back. I’ve had various scammers like these. Although it is proving hard to sell my bike it’s for the better…
Hi Nick
i got an email from Mr ‘Ali Sherif’ about parts i had on here so definately a scam!
Regards, Nik
I sold my sp111 some years ago. One potential customer said he would pass me a cheque for 10,000 (more than the asking price) and would like me to pay him the difference together with my bike. I paid the cheque into my bank and the amount was credited to my account. Needless to say it was stolen and some time later the amount was withdrawn. As the buyer had a Nigerian name I didn’t fall for it, nor any other name. But don’t think that just because your account is credited that nothing can go wrong.
All I have just received same scam emails for some shock absorbers and exhaust pipes.
Please beware as scammers requesting bank details. Think the forum should introduce some safeguards to stop anyone being conned
What safeguards would you suggest? We already advise - repeatedly - that people do not share personal contact, location or financial details in here, and that contact with prospective buyers/sellers be made ONLY via the internal messaging system.
Do you feel there is something more that might be done? I, for one, would be interested to hear.
Unless I’ve misunderstood..
I’m guessing it’s that the rules state you must provide contact details, rather than requiring those interested have a user profile & use a PM.?
I understand that this is an ‘open forum’, so there may be non-members reading it, but if they’re genuinely interested, personally I think they should be required to sign up to view any contact details and enquire about the item.
I wouldn’t post my contact info to any ‘open’ forum, so wouldn’t use the Marketplace.
Sadly the wold if full of miscreants looking to harvest such info for nefarious reasons.
