I’ve had a little Ducati on the marketplace for about a year now. No enquiries, but then cash is short for most of us. Strangely though, in the space of two days, I have had emails from two people with foreign sounding names asking to buy it and collect from me. As ad’s on the club marketplace and available to view by the general public, I’m suspicious that it may be a scam. The two emails I got where from: Ali Sherif allisherif08@gmail.com & Thomas Hernandez thomashernandez554@gmail.com Anyone else come across these characters?
Nope, not heard of either.
Does seem dodgy, as ever, if they are genuine they’ll likely want to view and not send cash via some odd method.
Just take care not to give away info, including your address, and don’t go meeting folk at their chosen location, oh, and take a friend or two to somewhere you’re comfortable
What a sad world we live in where we feel this way eh.
I can’t be of any direct assistance, but I would observe that this illustrates why we urge members not to share any identifiable informations (emails, phone numbers, etc) on this platform.
There are, as I understand, rogues around.
It’s screaming “SCAM” at me

There certainly are some dodgy types around! Unfortunately, the club Marketplace is viewed by all and every advert has email/phone numbers at the bottom. There appears to be no other way of buyers contacting sellers.
Yeah. I’ve just put my LM1000 up for sale and immediately had 2 scammers email me, gmail addresses. Poor english, asked if I’d take a cheque from the postman and courier would pick up etc etc. Unfortunately there are scumbags out there
Should add when you put an ad on marketplace it automatically adds your contact details! I hadn’t realised I wasn’t posting to the forum as I’m a newbie. You live and learn
Really.!
Surely that can’t be right (and probably against disclosure rules).
Quite possibly I’m not right and I didn’t read the manual properly!
The forum is equally accessible, hence my earlier post! Do not share personal details here.
It is the case, and clearly advertised to be the case on the form where one enters the details for the (free) marketplace advert. If a different service is required by the members, for the members, that would something to raise with the committee.
I’ve had an email today from ‘Ali Sherif’ asking about an advert I placed for some riding gear just over a year ago. I think it’s a data gathering scam but alarmingly the sender seemed to want my address to pick the items up. I have blocked the sending email account having considered the poor written grammar, which is often an indication of scammers. I’d suggest you do the same.
Yes, quite right, email contact has to be in the advert. I have tried removing contact details and asked buyers to pm me via the forum but that’s not possible so I’ve deleted the ad’. I’ll raise it with the committee as you suggest.
All good advice and most likely a scam. The problem with selling a bike is that you’d need a van to meet somewhere with a buyer or ride it there and have a friend in their car. Outside or near a police station would put off crooks. Also the usual rules of no test ride etc and keep the locks on when starting/demonstrating the engine so can’t be ridden off. A friends house for the viewing may be a good alternative also. Especially if they don’t have a garage etc. you will get decent buyers so you have to make yourself not look like a crook as well. . Never simple these days is it. Lastly, hide an AirTag on it until the deal is done. You never know.
Yes, you need to be careful of people with foreign-sounding names. I expect that proviso doesn’t apply to Italians, though.
Glad you put the bit in about Italians !!! I recently advertised on the club marketplace account and got an email from a English name, wanted to buy the part and wanted to get his secretary to send a cheque immediately and not to worry about posting it, he would organise pick up. I replied saying the part would only fit a 1962 Cali Automatic and he never got back to me .
I sold the part on EBay

I’ve had a few random contacts when selling a bike, but not from those 2 particular gentlemen. The usual scam is that the interested party is working overseas but will send a mate to collect the bike if I accept an online payment for the bike plus a bit more for the mate’s trouble, which I’m supposed to then give to the mate on collection. The plan is that I release the bike to the mate, the online payment is then reversed so that not only have I lost my bike but I’m also out of pocket for more than the asking price. If I’m selling a bike there are no test rides under any circumstances, I only accept cash, and on the day of the sale I accompany the purchaser to the nearest bank where he pays the cash into my account before I release the bike. I then have an irreversible receipt for the cash and the buyer has the bike. A little extra process but it’s 100% secure and it does help to sort out the genuine buyers from the villains
Definitely a scam I’ve had 2 requests from Ali Sherif on totally random marketplaces
Ali Sherif is very busy…he’s emailed me too
Maybe Ali wants to ride a Cali…?
As for email addresses, I find email@email.com usually works…
Maybe if it demands a telephone number, just enter the Helpline number of your internet supplier… I find mine never bloomin answer
