Cali tyres

I thought white lining and overbanding were things of the past. I was reminded of past problems on a recent tour on my 2006 Cali Classic which I bought with new Dunlop tyres, my previous bike, BMW F800GT had Metzlers which gave me much more confidence. Obviously it is something I have to live with until the tyres are worn out as I would not junk new ones. My Cali has wire wheels but it will (hopefully) be a while before I change the tyres.

No experience of Dunlops (not since the 1970s), but the current Metzelers are great. Previous Michelin sport activ were also good.

On the Cali and before the tyres get too much stick you mention “white lining and overbanding”. You also say that you were touring; presumably with more load.

Rear shock settings come to mind. Also have you recently checked on engine bolt torques, steering damper, swing-arm bearings, etc?

If you add a tank bag it can alter your riding position and create some strange effects.

Finally, if touring it could just be rubbish roads and surface dressings. (Locally we still get tar-spray and chippings applied to deep potholes!) :scream:

thanks for that, yes l had panniers top box and tank bag, next time I will take less although I did not exceed the recommended weights, It will be a while before I change to Metzlers.

I had a 2000 California Special and it helped to use the tyre pressure that the tyre manufacturer recommended, (rather than the motorcycle manufacturer, Moto Guzzi). Tyres have changed a lot in the last 25 years and a lot are designed to run 36F 42R whether Solo, with Pillion, or with Luggage too. I seem to remember 33.5 and 39.2 being the required amount for the Special.

Thanks, it is a pity that this is not made clear by the Tyre manufacturers or fitters. (Perhaps it is???) I will try these higher pressures.

My California EV has AVON tyres fitted - tyre pressures 34 psi front 35 psi back.
