Cali Vintage - click no start issue

Hi all…

its back to the starting wows….I started out for a ride, got to a traffic light (fortunately a few yards from home) as I start to pull off..she cuts out and would not start.

I have checked fuses (lesson learned from the last time  ) they look ok. Battery is fully charged.

When I hit the starter, I can hear the starting relay click and the headlight turns off. I have checked the wiring connections and found a rouge black wire…not sure where it is supposed to go or even this is the culprit…any help would be appreciated.

What you need, my friend, is a nice, easy to read, laminated wiring diagram. And I know where you can probably get one from.

And technically, this isn’t the “renowned” click no start issue. This is broken wire no start :joy:

I did check the wiring diagram and there is no mention of (from what I can see) a black wire coming from the fuse and going to another…a mystery indeed..

Really? Can’t tell a lot from your images, but a heavy duty wire from fuse box, clearly disconnected from something… I’d say your starter isn’t getting a live feed. Somewhere to start, anyway!

Is it possibly a wire that should go to ground? Check for the ground connector terminal it could have come off or maybe the terminal connector has fallen off as well leaving the wire in view. I’m no expert as it’s just a guess. Good look👍

I would not assume that the black wires are earth (ground) unless the correct wiring diagram says that they are.

On my 1980 Spada and my 1984 Lario they were black but on my 2007 GRiSO and my 2022 V85tt the earth wires are blue.

Just asked Mr Google some Moto guzzi ground wires on a Cali are green. That’s the magic of the Guzzi. You can use a multimeter to test the wire. Set it to continuity or resistance mode and check for a connection to ground. If there’s a connection, then it is a ground wire. Or maybe a fellow Cali owner can have a look at their bike in order to assist?

Morning all,

Here is a better picture of the fuses, it looks like it is coming from the 5a fuse for the indicators and looks like it “should” be connected to the 15a fuse for the fog lights and the 12v power adaptor, the black tape on the green wire looks to be a giveaway….if that is the case…that shouldn’t stop her from starting…or would it?

Cheers

Good man for tracing the wire…I don’t know the answer to the question but try starting your bike again as it is and if no joy you may want to undo the black tape to see if the black wire was connected and if so reconnect and try starting. So long as it’s fused shouldn’t be a problem. However wiser folk may provide a definite answer. Good luck :four_leaf_clover: :crossed_fingers: :four_leaf_clover:

Looking at this wiring diagram (2008) there are no black wires to the fuses, is it some other little black box? There are a few to choose from

Or this is the 2006 diagram

Hubby says Google Moto Guzzi Breva “no start” or “click” or “startis interuptis” He says Breva’s and Griso’s do the same. Won’t start but there’s a “click” info online as to what you need to do. Good luck :+1:

Just found a video on how to sort it…Ill give it a go on the weekend…thanks

As Barry said “technically, this isn’t the “renowned” click no start issue. This is broken wire no start”. However you never know. Either way the black wire has become detached from something, which as you say seems to be from an indicator. I still think that it’s possibly a ground connection. Anyway good luck over the weekend and hopefully resolve the mystery :+1:

I would assume that the wire has been disconnected by a previous owner at some point in time. Presumably the bike used to work fine before this issue so it will need to be investigated. According to the wiring diagrams I found, there are no black wires going to the fuses so will need more thought.

Is the wire original? Does it actually go into the main loom, or does it look like it is something that someone has added in the past?

  • Is there any current in the black wire when you turn the ignition on?

  • Is there any current in the black wire with the ignition off but when you turn the park lights on?

  • Is there any current in the black wire with the ignition off?

  • The fuse that the black wire comes out of you say is a 5A fuse and that would suggest the indicators, but there is no white wire to the fuse box on Carl Allison’s wiring diagram as seen in your photo. The other 5A fuse on the wiring diagram feeds the ECU via a green/white wire, is this the white wire in your photo but the green stripe is hidden from view? If this is the case the black wire should not connect to earth as the red wire to this fuse connects direct to the battery positive terminal.

  • What is the fuse to the left of the picture that appears to have come away from its neighbour or is that the first relay?

Carl Allison’s wiring diagram shows 7 fuses, the one that appears to be missing from your photo is for auxiliary lights and socket (F5 15A) all of the other appear to be in the right place with the correct colour wires. Unfortunately I can’t find a workshop manual for the Cali Vintage to check Carl Allison’s wire colours but I suspect that the black wire that is unconnected is live as the red one it joins to the fuse with comes direct from the battery

Do not connect the black wire to earth!

Best wishes Chris

Here’s another possibility; I have a ‘78 T3 850, which I use very infrequently.

I had to pop over to drop a small package off after work to a friend who lives about 5 or 6 miles away, and I had a commitment later in the evening. I decided to take the bike as it was a nice evening, I could nip through traffic and get back quickly in time to go out.

Started fine, rode perfectly; got to friends house and turned it off, as I had to leave the package over his back fence and then text him to say where it was. Didn’t want the bike Sat ticking over annoying his neighbours.

Got back on it to ride home after max 2 minutes and…. Nothing. Nada. Headlights were fine, but nothing from the starter at all. Shoved it in gear and rocked it back and forth in case it was a jammed starter, still nothing. I was sure the battery was charged as I’d taken it off and stuck it on an overnight charge

With fading light and limited tools / phone charge / electrical knowledge, I called out the RAC, who, to be fair, arrived within about half an hour.

The guy got his circuit tester out and started checking through the electrics and found that there was a very poor earth actually on the battery negative terminal. He cleaned it up with a bit of emery cloth and voila; problem solved. He indicted it was probably oxidisation on the terminal that had prevented a decent connection, but just enough to start it up, then in riding it, maybe it had just vibrated round enough to break the connection.

Could be worth having a look at.

Thank you all for your inputs, its certainly given me some food for thought..I’ll be taking a good look on the weekend and hopefully get her up and running again.

I’m no ‘lecktrikery hexspurt’ but..

That does not look like a standard wire to me.

It’s a different colour to the one it’s combined with in the connector block, with the heatshrink added, and especially the type of wire used, i.e not a flexible multi-strand wire like most are on a bike, it just looks odd.

I know these bikes are put together in a ‘very different way’ to all the (reliable) Japanese stuff I’ve usually ridden, but to me that wire looks like an addition by a previous owner. Something to supply feed to an accessory of some sort..?

Or am I simply unfamiliar with the weird and wonderful way Luigi does things.?

It’ll be interesting to hear the solution.

I agree it looks like a later addition, the black wire is thicker than the others and none of the other wires have heat shrink where they enter the fuse holder. From the wiring diagram it appears to be live and so I agree with the king that it was probably added for an accessory.

If the OP can check the points I raised in my post above then I will have a better idea.

Best wishes Chris

Hi Chris,

Ok did some testing….the black wire is indeed live, with ignition on and off.

The other wire from that fuse is White with a red stripe.

To the left are the three relays and to the right there are two relays and two fuses.

there is also a thin back wire coming from the green wire
