California 3 Tacho Wiring Connections

I need some info on which wire goes where on my electronic tacho. The connectors disengaged before I had chance to make a note.

See pictures. On the tacho I have +12, +24, S, +L and -

Wires - I have red, yellow, yellow/black, 2x black.

THANKS in advance!!

I cant help with which wire goes where but the wires are

  • Red - 12V+
  • Black - Earth 0V
  • Yellow - Switched 12V for backlight
  • Black/Yellow - Tacho Signal from CDI

Hope that helps a bit

Russell

Thanks - that’s maybe enough for a trial connect up…

Maybe S for Signal (from CDI), +L for lamp (Tacho switched light)

That leaves “+24” and "- "and the only wires left are 2x black ie earth.

I’d like to know what +24 means!

+24 = 24 volt input, oddly enough  but yes, your trial guesses are correct.

Once you have worked it out make a sketch, I did 40 years ago for my Tonti, and they still pay dividends!

Hope it works for you, best wishes Chris

Will do. Not sure if my tacho is standard either. It has a different bezel to the speedo.

Different in what way? As your bike is a Cali III, then it’s possible that one of them (speedo/tacho) is actually off a Cali 1100ie. I’d guess the oddball is the tacho as I know from waybackwhen they had a reputation for going phut.

The bezels on the front are different.

The tacho wasn’t working when I bought the bike (as a project!)

Well there’s odd. The speedo and tacho on my Cali1100ie had raised bezels, which implies that the tacho is not standard.

(Edited to replace ‘speedo’ with ‘tacho’ at the end of the sentence. Sometimes brain, eyes and fingers really don’t want to communicate with each other  ).

Clearly non oem tach. Not marked and so not Veglia. It might actually be one that works instead of a “vague liar” Veglia!

Argh!!! Thanks Brian - edited my post to reflect what I meant to say and not what I actually said.

A vague liar would be an improvement in how it was!

Thanks for all the input so far…

These are the clocks from my 1988 Cali 3 carb model. The tacho is slightly different to yours
