carburettor repairs?

I pulled the carb apart and noticed a small piece of the casting had broken off, indicated by the needle pliers. I’ll send a pic later when I get home.
Does anyone know if they can be repaired?

Does the damage compromise a threaded hole or a rubber seal? If not it is probably worth fixing?

Cheers, I’ll have to have a proper look later.

Threaded part is at bottom of the tube it’s in and the o ring goes in to the float chamber :person_shrugging:

It doesn’t look that bad, clean the area and use JBweld.

It doesn’t look chipped, it is possibly a bad casting? Stumpy Fingers idea sounds good as long as you keep the weld stuff on the outside and don’t block any holes! I think Araldite might be petrol resistant too, and it’s easy to file/sand.

Does it leak air? If not maybe just leave it as is?

I’ll have a look on monday, busy today

So I had another peep. The jet does have 4 holes at the top, one of which is not covered by the casting when tightened.
It is the jet for the choke.

Not so good from that angle. You will either have to rebuild the jet holder by either aluminium welding or JB weld filler stuff or find a second hand carb body. If you try and fix it the hole for the jet must be cleaned and tapped to suit. Maybe get a specialist to do it for you? If you do that it may be cheaper to find a second hand body.

Good luck, and well spotted!

Hi Neil

What Carb is it? I have lots of Dellorto spares in stock!

I have had a go with the JB weld. I found a drill that was a very close fit into the casting and then wrapped some cling film around it. It went in with some care. I’ve applied some JB weld and left it in a warm place.
I’ll let you know how it goes :crossed_fingers:

Hi Nik, I’ve had a go with the JB weld, see reply to Chris, so we’ll see what happens.
It’s a Dellorto VHBZ 24 F so I may be in touch

Ok Neil I have a couple of VHBZ 24 FD and FS , left and right hand.

Regards, Nik

Ok, thanks. At least one of mine has spent an amount of time submerged.
How much for the pair?

Rough as a welders bench

Yippee! Full marks for perseverance! :+1:

Are you using the damaged carb? Could be an air leak? Good luck with tracing the reason.

(PS I am put to shame, I have had a 20 year head start on you and as I haven’t put a battery in mine yet it doesn’t even go “Parp, Parp!” let alone “Brum, Brum!”

It sounds like you have a slight air leak, it could also be mistimed, double check the valve adjustment and the timing marks.

I managed to JB weld it but there is a tiny gap. The o rings and fibre washers are quite tired so I’ve ordered a couple of gasket sets from Eurocarb.

Neil, its £50 for the pair of Bodies only. Im going to run them thru the ultrasonic to make sure they are good.

Thanks Nik, I’ll try mine with all the new seals in first and give them another few passes through the ultrasonic as well. I’ll let you know.
Good to know you have parts available.
