I had a knocking from my V50. It sounded like the starter pinion was hitting the flywheel, it wasn’t. It was the U/J beginning to fail.
Hi. I had noisy tappets on my Cali special. Specifically right hand. Set clearances but still loud.
Garage said that push rods were just about jumping out and that was probably the banging. Rockers had a flat spot and had worn a groove in the valve top. My first thought was I hadn’t tightened the nut properly. The garage were fairly sure it wasn’t anything I’d done. Something brewing for a while.
Had to have replacement contents of both heads. £2000 for all new parts. No chance. Gutsibits got a mixture of old and new sent out for about £500. With labour £750, so not to bad. New rockers were the bulk of £2000.
So if setting the clearance doesn’t work, take it to a garage. With any luck you might not need the lot. Or it might be something simple.

At this stage,it’s sort of nice to know I am not the only one who’s had problems " down there".
The garage said expect around £500 parts and labour…so thats got you thinking …

There was a hole in the cam follower.It had disintegrated.

Ah that has happened to me! Definitely sounds clattery.
I hope ‘engineer’ is going to remove the sump to wash out all the broken bits of metal?? (I had to, and clean the pick-up screen filter. And new oil and filter change!)

The Cali has returned!
Cost a lot to get fixed.Got it back on 20th September, so missed some nice days out.
The cam shaft was messed up,the cam followers had holes in,a piston ring had broke,the engine was running very hot,the oil was like treacle,there was emulsification.
Whoever a previous owner was,then they did an appalling job on the engine.
I have the knackered bits,snd will send photos.
