Hello fellow Guzzi fans,
I’m a long time Guzzi rider recently retired from the US to Portugal. I brought my 1973 V7sport with me but I’m struggling to register it. The problem is that the US market bikes made use of a tag riveted to the headstock that shows the same frame and engine numbers. As the Portuguese inspection requires a stamped frame number, I removed the tag to look for it. No luck, this particular frame never received one. This is apparently typical for the US bikes.
I need a letter from Moto Guzzi stating that some bikes sent to the US didn’t get a stamped number. Anyone know who I could get this from?
surely the point is knowing who the relevant authorities would accept the information from and in what form?
I have to agree with Barry, the Portuguese authorities must have this happen before. You need to find out exactly what they need to see and who it must come from. I suspect that you will have no joy contacting Moto Guzzi and I doubt that they will write such a letter even if you get in touch with them.
I assume that you bought the bike in the USA and it was registered there, it might be easier to get a letter from the US registration authority stating the frame number that you need to show in Portugal. Have you tried asking the US Guzzi fora?
Good luck
Hi Barry, the Portuguese IMT have indicated that they would accept a ‘letter from Moto Guzzi’ stating that my bike did not receive a stamped frame number.
This being Portugal, I’m sure any letter with a Moto Guzzi header stating the above would probably work. Maybe I just need to invent one…
Actually Chris I think I have the only US spec V7sport in Portugal at the moment. The other folks that I’ve met here with them have brought them in from the European mainland.
Hey folks
I’m guessing Ingineman is asking the question having been told to get that specific info by the Portuguese authorities..
Good call from you Chris re asking the US importer (also, are there any US based folk on here who can have a chat with their local dealer.?).
While I can’t advise on specific contact details for Guzzi themselves, in addition to the above I’d say..
- Chat with your local dealer/importer explaining the issue and advise them you’ll also contact them in an email and ask they respond (whether that’s to explain or simply say they cannot assist).
- Call the dealer you used while in the US, again explaining the issue and once more saying you will be sending an email too and ask if they’d kindle respond (again, irrespective of whether they can assist or not).
- Try contacting Guzzi via Social Media, (while we’ve all forgotten how to write or even post a letter, all companies now are all over their ‘Socials’).
They don’t like negative comments and love to be seen doing ‘good things’ for their owners, so you may get more luck.
Once you’ve done all this, collate and print off the ‘evidence’ and present it to see if that satisfies the Authorities..
Finally, if all that fails, pop out and buy a set of letter/number stamps and markup your frame..
I have a set I my garage if you’re passing
Good luck, Mick
That solution I like. My COC from BMW magically changed to something more digestable for Transport for London. (PDF pro helped).
