Distributor Woes

Recently whilst servicing my 1974 Moto Guzzi 850GT I cleaned the points with fine wet and dry. The bike refused to start after this. I removed a spark plug and turned the engine over but there was no spark at the plug. After removing the distributor cap then refitting it I got a spark at the plug. However after refitting the plug and trying to start it, it fired up for a second then cut out and wouldn’t start. When I checked the plug again there was no spark.
Has anyone come across this type of problem.

No- I chickened out and put electronic ignition on it, and sold the distributor

I would be inclined to look at the points and check with a multi meter if you have one.

Silly question but did you check/reset the gap after cleaning?
