Has anyone any knowledge of the gadget that replaces condensers? Saw it advertised once, thinking it began with a G. It looked about the size of a matchbox with 6 wires, one to each battery terminal, one to each coil and one directly to each set of points. Wondering if it will improve running and reliability. Cheers.
Nope havent heard of it.
What is the problem with the condensers? They are just capacitors there to stop the 12v trying to jump the gap as the points open and burn the points. They usually last for years and aren’t very expensive Gutsibits v50 condensers £8
Hi Jon . Bikes running a bit rough and not starting as easy as usual . Got new points being delivered and will fit them and check timing but was wondering how good this gadget was . Cheers.
Back when points were the rule. We enerally didn’t look at the condensers unless (1) the points were visibly arcing (2) one of the condensers was actually short circuit (3) we had tried everything else and we were stumped.
If you get to stage 3 its probably fuelling lol
We run a Monza and a V50 with points ignition. Condensers have been of variable quality in recent years, in two cases not working at all from new. We’ve experienced similar issues with ignition coils and spark plugs. I send the dud parts back to the supplier and request replacements. Poor manufacturing quality control is an issue and in some cases poor product knowledge on behalf of the retailer. An alternative system would be great if it meant not having to grovel under the bike to access the points/condensers - if you find the solution RedRay please let the world know!
There’s something out there , just don’t know what it’s called or how good it is. Cheers .
Apologies to being really late to this, but as a new member I’m still trawling the forums for information and to see where I might be able to help. RedRay is right: it’s called an Inductive Discharge Unit and it’s made by Boyer-Bransden
Not that the Boyer Bransden unit is a complete electronic ignition system - not just a replacement capacitor
