Anyone on here used these ? Video comes across that they know what they are doing. Esp when they mention biggest problem was part throttle. Graph shows how weak it runs at part throttle.
Im also thinking, compared to the cost of de-cat pipes (i would need down pipes too) and a v-boost, and possibly the bellmouth for in the air box this may be a cheaper option to smooth things out.
Will see how she runs when i get her back from iron city, had a good chat with workshop technician and he understood how its affecting riding with the low speed surging.
I have an UpMap on my standard 2023 E5 V85tt. Is a velocity stack from Mistral worth £140?
it does make a difference but it’s not huge. it’s meant to be fitted with a different air filter as well, i didn’t do that yet.
Picking bike back up today, iron city found nothing wrong. All parameters in spec and i think they have spoken to piaggio and been told, its just its characteristics. So will decide over winter what way im going to go
Just to drive me more nuts, it started pinking under hard acceration on the way home from iron city, you couldnt bloody make it up
What fuel are you using? E5 or E10? Despite the specs suggesting it will run E10 I never do (unless I can’t get anything else)
In my opinion all air/oil cooled Guzzis benefit from higher octane fuel. Especially if you’re experiencing pre ignition.
If possible I use Shell V power, it really does make a difference.
Jon
Normally put E5 in, tank was ready for filling up so tank now full of shell v power E5. Will see how it goes. Im still grumpy this morning about how its running, yes i could de-cat and v-boost or ECU remap but i shouldnt have to. As much as i love the bike and i did say i was sticking with it, this bloody pinking under load has really ticked me off, so im not going to lie im looking at other bikes today, but winters coming so i cant see the point in a re-map until spring and basically im dissillusioned with the bike. I look at her and think shes wonderful then she starts pinking like an old dog. Bloody bike
@Sparkieb
Mine is a 2022 with 6k miles - no pinking when caning it or gently or 2 up so they don’t all do it.
Some USA riders on ADV RIder reported pinking - but usually at high altitude - most of them seemed to go the Y pipe route
I know you have had a mech look at it but have you done the old skool checks with pinking?
(1) check the exhausts are seated and tight to the heads (pipes hammering can sound just like pinking)
(2) valve clearances (tight ex valve gets hot)
(3) long shot - head torque figures as might be slow heat transfer from head
The other thing that happens with modern fuel, is it goes stale and remarkably quickly.
The E5 vs E10 debate has gone on, like choice of oil. But I can actually feel the difference between Super and Regular, before and after the change from E5 to 10 the other year. And I’m not just talking about old machines, though they suffer the worst.
My BMW R1200RS would deliver about 15% better fuel economy on Super and was very much smoother, so we’re not just talking ‘off marques’ here. Our '16 Honda Jazz is the same. Feels a bit rougher and the mpg suffers with Regular. Our Mandello does it, too.
I’ve noticed there are a couple of places on the A1 that I’ve paid for Super but the roughness and mpg indicated it was really Regular, so that happens too. You can just get a bad batch of fuel sometimes, whether deliberate, or just has some water in it.
I find the fuel starts noticeably going ‘off’ after about two weeks in the tank. And this sits with something I read that Esso Australia fessed up to a couple of years ago; that modern fuel loses about 5% per week from the tank to evaporation. ( I might have that number wrong; was it 10%? ). Anyway, point is, those will be the volatiles, so the mix of the petrol is now very different after two weeks and so its combustion will be different.
Where I’m going is, don’t despair yet. Having bad fuel is a lot more common than most people think. Try the fresh fuel, it might be very different once you run some of that through. Just don’t leave it too long before trying it.
Thankyou, yes im going to run the full tank of shell power before i do anything rash. Im a lot less grumpy today and just enjoy randomly looking at other bikes whilst enjoying a cuppa. If she wasnt so beautiful to look at, she would be gone by now but ive yet to see anything quite so good looking as my v85
Had a couple of ride outs since the pinking issue, tank full of shell power has cured that issue, so no more cheap fuel for me. Has no one re-mapped their v85tt, not one reply saying its rubbish or a revelation. Must admit the bhp uk video is making me think its the way to go, esp when they show the part throttle graph and how weak its running. Anyway unless theres a big christmas discount at bhp uk i will wait until spring now that ive got over looking at 1050 v-strom,s and get it re-mapped next year leaving everything else alone.
i think soneone has posted in another thread about a remap.
i am using the mistral booster plug which is a cheaper option and easily removed, i think the upmap from italy is probably better but I’ve not ridden one that has used this, just had opinions from a guy in he club here who is very happy with it.
the benefit of using the upmap is you can remap it yourself after a dealer update and/or return it to standard map prior to MoT if needed.
If you go down the UpMap root, everything is done from your phone which Bluetooth the most suitable map for your bikes setup via the UpMap modual that connects to the diagnostic port, very easy to use, mine no longer pinks even when stuck in traffic at 35C temperatures, and still gets good mpg.
2023 model V85Tt
UpMap made an improvement to low revs throttle response so I can go down to 2,000 and accelerate steadily. Mid range is improved. I also added a Velocity stack which added more go.
Only concern is the fuel consumption which was 56 running in is now 53, and I was hoping for more.
i found using cruise control as often as possible and keeping speed down to 60-65 gets me well over 60mpg with v boost plug fitted and mistral exhaust/decat/velocity stack.
i think the best i had over a day of riding was 68.8mpg, before the mods. best since was over 67mpg so not much difference.
Is that fuel consumption measured at fill up or from the dash?
At motorway speeds (ahem) i found that using the cruise control slightly increased the displayed fuel consumption -by about 2-3%. But i didn’t do enough motorway to see a measured difference.
I am getting 62mpg tank to tank.
It seems to drink more at a steady 80ish than when being revved hard on A roads but as it has the aerodynamics of a barn door I am not surprised
both the dash (i zero it each fill) and the app which i use as well.
i did measure amount used and distance covered the first few months to see if the dash mpg is accurate and it seems it is close enough.
Bought UpMap online from Gcorse in Italy. They posted the dongle to the UK and I had to pay import tax on the full cost.
I needed help and they replied first in Italian and then in English. It took a few goes to get it to load and they checked and confirmed on line that it was ok.
