Electronic rev counter problem

My 72 V7 is fitted with a black face electronic rev counter, with two wires that connect either side of the coil,
The system worked fine for first couple of weeks but know the needle swings around to 80 as soon as you turn on the ignition without the engine running.
There is another wire that earth’s out the case, this is fitted and tested, any ideas?

Is there any make or model on the rev counter so you might be able to find some instructions for it? I doubt a 1972 bike would have had an electronic tacho as standard, it must be an aftermarket item.
My cali 3 has an electronic tacho. This has just one wire attached to just one coil, but it is probably a different set up.

Hello Don, the tacho is pukka Veglia fitted between 72-74 it’s identical to the one fitted to my 74 850GT

I’m surprised that a 72 bike has an electronic tacho. the one on my 78 Spada is mechanical.
You should be able to find a wiring diagram here to see if you can trace the wiring to look for a dodgy connection,

Hello Don, I’m afraid there is nothing new in this world, when I bought my first 850Gt in 1975 it had a electronic rev counter, they went backwards in 1975 back to cable operation driven from the front of the engine timing case when they brought out the Norge they went backwards again to belt drive as with the V7.
I have checked the wiring you can’t get that wrong Pos or Neg, that’s why I’m confused it worked for 500 miles then had a woble, is there a resistor-diode-coil that can fail inside, how do they work?

Sorry, I have no ideas with regards the internal workings of these things. Maybe time for a bit of Google searching
I have heard mention of a place in Farnborough that does repairs with good feedback, but no personal experience
