Ev Spindle nut,front wheel

Hello all,
Took the EV for new front tyre.
They didnt have tool for the spindle nut.
Bloke at tyre place said he’s not seen this in 17 years.
Any ideas.Guzibits on it too.
Thanks.

It does seem to be an unusual set up. The spindle screws into a thread in the left fork leg and is clamped by 2 screws in the right leg. Did you get the tool kit with the bike? I would assume that would have incuded a spanner to undo it.
I did manage to find this

This is the source of that image

Hi Don,
No tool kit.Only way of removing nut is hammer and chisel.
Then my issue is replacing the nut.Perhaps M16.
Only want a new front tyre.Become a right moider.
Thank you

Assuming from what you have said your set up is type 1 with an external nut to the left hand fork. It should be easy enough to find a spanner that fits the nut, failing that an adjustable spanner might be your friend.

If you need a replacement nut measure the thread diameter on the shaft and the thread pitch using thread pitch gauges. With this information you will be able to find a replacement.

Best of luck!

Thanks Chris,
I absolutely understand you.The crazy thing about this " nut",is that its round with four keyways equally spaced.
The guys at PRO TYRE were flummoxed and discombobulated. So I have spent the past five days scratching my head.Still awaiting a return call from GUZZIBITS…maybe they’re flummoxed too.I only want a new tyre!!!

There are a lot of them on eBay (other auction sites are available) This one click here is from China, so it may not be readily available.

I Googled “Castle nut sockets” and found loads. Measure the nut OD and the thickness and depth of the slots, I’m sure you will find one that fits.

When you get it off replace it with a hex nut to avoid future aggravation!

Best of luck

Can you add a picture here of the bottom of the forks from both sides?
I did find this special tool, but it’s for Sport, Daytona and Centauro

Don!
That is the very tool I am looking for.It is a bit pricey,as it will be used for around a minute! HA!
Right, thats great. Now one knows there’s a tool for it,I need to take action.
If anyone out there knows the diameter and thread size of a half nut I would need, then that would be TREMENDOUS!
Thanks again.

It looks like it is a peg spanner with 4 notches that locate into 4 slots in the nut, similar to the one for the clutch nut etc. I have heard of people making one from a spare socket of the correct diameter and a bit of time with an angle grinder.
I also wonder if your Cali has different front end as those nuts were only fitted to the Sport models etc.
Alternatively, look up castle nut on eBay, I assume they come in different sizes, something like this
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/183804657895

Thats it Don.
I could knock one together!
Or I could heat the nut up and get mole grips/ stilson etc. Then examine threads and replace with a normal nut?
Legend.

This is the spanner from the tools provided with the bike which removes the nut. Although when I had my tyres changed they were able to remove using other tools.

Thank you Tim,
One is getting closer to a resolution.
Have ordered M20 half nuts,hoping they’ll fit.The thread is a concern.
That tool is the kiddy.Sadly the California didnt come with a tool kit.
You’re a LEDGE!

To ensure the nuts fit, measure the diameter and the pitch of the threads, as I said above.
Thread pitch gauges are relatively cheap click here for Amazon Or even cheaper on AliExpress

Armed with these two bits of information you will be able to match the thread exactly :+1:

Thank you Chris,
Will no doubt need a bolt gauge.Your contribution is much appreciated.

Hello all,
For your information. The spindle nut for the Cali EV is M20 1.5 pitch( fine).
I had to use a punch to release the existing nut.Once off measured the thread and ordered half nut.
One will eventually get that new front tyre
