F09 Rear Brake Calliper

Good afternoon everyone, I run a 1982 Spada SP, with standard braking system. the brakes have been spongey recently and I tried to bleed the system yesterday. During the process I discovered one of the bleed nipples on the rear calliper, (Brembo F09 twin bleed) wouldn’t tighten up. The thread has been stripped in the calliper body. I intend to try and fix it, if at all possible. If not I’ll be looking for a decent second hand replacement. Does anyone have such an item for sale.

Kindest regards.

Dickie

Can I suggest that you get a thread insert for the stripped thread, most garages (not showrooms) or engineering works should be able to do this for you, at a cheaper cost than the kit is to buy to do it yourself.

Thanks Chris, You’ve echoed my thoughts, Dickie

I believe you can also fit an F08 in place of the F09 as the mounting bolt centres are the same. I looked at this when I struggled to find piston and seal kits for mine. F08’s and parts for them are much more common.
I suppose brake force/balance would be altered a bit but for normal riding I don’t think it would be crucial. You could always take the pressure-reducing valve out and replace with the plain junction like some other Tonti bikes. Then the rear would get the same pressure as the front.

Thanks Ian. I’ve found a website called Ducati Paddy, who sells loads of Brembo bits and has been helpful in answering my questions. He supplies an M7 bleed nipple and suggests tapping the calliper with the M7 thread, which is worth a try. He also sells P08 and P09 callipers. So your suggestion may yet come to pass.

Kindest regards.

I remember that the mix of pads’ friction coefficient was quite specific for the Spada, it went something like: right front (handlebar lever single caliper), 222 (medium, or ‘normal’); front left (linked), 224 (softer = more grippy) rear 220 (harder = less grippy, but pads are bigger). The idea was if you press the pedal gently you get 50/50% braking effort, if you stomp on it you get 70% front 30% rear. I think this rarely worked out in reality. Then some years later you could only get the 222 grade, at least that’s all Motomecca stocked, so that was that.
