Hi,
I’ve noticed that my odometer adds up miles very slowly.
My estimation is that it accounts for 1/10 of the actual distance.
Speedometer, on the other end, seems to work fine as it gives reasonable speed reading.
I don’t think it’s a cable problem as if it was speedometer and odometer would have given readings consistent with each other so I guess it’s the unit itself that is broken.
As anyone of you had similar problem?
Do you know if it is possible to fix the odometer?
I’d like to see the actual mileage on the clock and it could be very sad if I needed to replace the odometer and see miles start from 0 again.
you got me confused
tachometer records engine revolutions per minute, and if cable driven will be via the crankshaft or some part of the engine
The Speedometer records your average speed
and the odometer records totla mileage covered by the motorcycle
so does the speedometer read the correct road speed
and is the Odomoter in miles or Kmh
if the speedometer is reading correctly then the faulty odomoter can usually be repaired
plenty of companies will refurbish it for you
Hi Ago, which Guzzi is it and does it have the odometer reset knob? If so, this can sometimes jam the mechanism if partially pulled out, worth checking first.
Cheers, Gerry.
Hi Duffo,
she’s California Vintage.
I’ve tried playing a bit with the trip reset knob but with no success.
I think I’ve just twisted it thou, I’ll try pulling and pushing as well, thanks.
I have a slightly unusual odometer issue on my 72 V7 Sport. Speedo is fine but odo got stuck and was not advancing. After much Guzzi related research I took the plunge and cut open the speedo casing and overhauled the odometer. No sign of anything broken, maybe sticking was just from age. However, now it’s all back together I have tested it on the road and when the first dial gets to between 6&7 (kilometers) the next dial clicks over, and so on. I have tried several re-arrangements of the dials and their tiny little internal gears but to no avail. Speedycables want 12weeks to look at it and the two other specialists only handle Smiths instruments.
I have searched hard for a replacement Veglia odo only without success so I guess I may have to live with the odo reading being seriously inaccurate - I only really need it to act as a fuel gauge anyway and there is always the reserve tap
Well, for those who might be interested, I think I have solved the problem myself! On close inspection of the odometer there is a small brass washer which slides over the central spindle, very close to the retaining spring which holds the odometer in place and keeps the five rotating mileage disks in place and engaged with their internal tiny gear wheels. This washer had moved very slightly along the spindle which allowed the first disk to disconnect from the next disk’s gear wheel - end result first disk rotates on its own and cannot move the next one up one digit.
Solution: shove washer tight against the first disk and supaglue it in place.
All of this only possible by making that cut into the speedo casing, which is now gorilla taped back together…I have saved a 12 week wait for Speedycables (and goodness knows how much) for them to do the same thing.
