I have hell of a job getting neutral on my 2017 V7iii is this common or is some ajustment needed somewhere ?
Hello Jamrick
It could be the adjustment of your clutch or the connection between the lever and the gearbox. I do not have a V7 but someone with better knowledge will be along soon!
Best wishes Chris
Thanks Chris. Guessed as much and will be investigating at the weekend.
My 2024 V7 Stone special is the same. Gets better when warm but once I’ve found neutral I always let the clutch with some trepidation as it has a mind of it’s own.
These modern Guzzis
My 5-speed boxes had more neutrals than gears. Cured by follwing Pete Roper’s advice and re-shimming the gearbox shafts. Less brick-in-bucket changes, but this is also down to better change up technique.
Poor neutral finding is usually associated with bad clutch actuation, either arm adjustment or on hydraulic systems bleeding.
The bit to pay attention to is:
“I learned from Karl Hartmeyer that the correct location of the extra shims is best checked through the oil filler hole when the gear box is assembled and the input and output nuts are properly tightened: Engage first gear and measure the gap between the sliding sleeve and the first gear wheel with a feeler gauge blade. Then engage second gear and check the gap between the sleeve and the second gear wheel. If measurements are not approx. the same, dismantle the box again and relocate the shims to move the drum in the right direction.”
Ignore the following un-necessary bit in the article about grinding the plunger. A refinement too far in my book. Half an hour careful shim adjustment resulted in a much sweeter box all round (if you can ever say that about a Guzzi Gearbox).
After checking clutch lever adjustment at the bars, check that the push rod at the back of the block is moving in and out freely and is not covered in road crud. This was the problem on my 2018 stone.

I’m tempted to ask.. “Which neutral are you looking for.?”..
Gotta say, whenever I’ve had similar issues on other bikes, I’ve always been pleasantly surprised how a simple remedy such as checking/removing any free play, and the application of suitable lubricant to linkages makes a world of difference.
Thanks for all your suggestions. Road crud on clutch actuator seemed to have been the problem. Cleaned, lubed and adjusted. Sorted
