Another question for the hive mind. Has anyone fitted the Oxford heated grips using the standard switch gear? I am wanting to do this but can’t find any details on how to connect them to the standard harness. Thanks in advance.
Yes.
There are two mini-molex plugs with brown and blue wires for the heated grips under the black plastic cover right of the steering head.
Guzzi use brown for switched power and blue for earth.
Cover is held by 3 torx screws on right and (irritatingly) one at the top joins the two from the left cover - I removed the tank to give more clarity.
You will need to use part of the main loom with the Oxfords to make fly leads to reach from each grip lead down to the connectors. So you can use the Oxford connectors at the top then add the 2 pin mini molex 5500 plug to connect to the Guzzi wiring Ebay link at the bottom. I also bought a mini molex crimp tool Ebay link - I am a toolaholic.
I found that the left grip required a bit of non-setting goo (wellseal) to slide on and stick. Meanwhile the throttle grip is tight required sanding a chamfer onto the inside of the hard tube in the grip and on the outside end of the tube.
It is good to get the throttle grip warm on 12v before fitting so it is more flexible, but don’t use the Guzzi grip circuit as this has no power until the bike is above tickover revs.
All works well and the indicator in the instrument panel works too!
Cheers Johnny, that’s perfect! Will order the bits today. Are the connectors two x the two pin variants, or one x a four pin version? (Not being lazy, just handy to get everything here and ready to go on before I start pulling bits off the bike).
2 x 2 pin molex
Also (1) Oxford Adventure grips are longer -they have a 4mm long trimmable end. (2) there are cheaper Oxford grips available with the older controllers - which is no disadvantage for this mod
i read somewhere the throttle needs reprogrammed if you change the grips, worth checking out if that’s the case, dealer has to do it
Because it is a ride-by-wire set if you fit a new twist grip you will usually need to synchronise it with the ECU.
To fit the Oxford grips -you don’t change the twist-grip. So no need to re-synchronise the twist-grip throttle with the ECU.
(The genuine Moto Guzzi heated grips come with a new twistgrip so if you use the MG kit you will probably to the re-synchronising/reprogramming - as far as i know this can only be done by a dealer using Piaggio’s PADS system.)
I bought a second battery tender lead ( Optimate) to match the one already fitted. I cut off the rings and soldered the wires to the hot grips wires. When you go out just unplug the battery tender and plug in the hot grips. When you get home unplug the hot grips and plug in the battery tender. You’ll never need both to be connected ;0)
However - you must check the polarity of the wiring as they wil be reversed.
This method does not use any of the bike’s wiring.
That is tidy Brockett.
But with the v85tt we are able to use the Oxford grips with the Guzzi wiring so that the grips are on a switched circuit and the bike’s own control button and warning light work.
did you fit these yet? my guzzi heated grips have failed and despite being fitted from new piaggio have said they are not covered under the warranty. they were never really hot enough in winter so i want to replace them with different grips
yes fitted. been on for 1010 miles no probs 1 is too cool to be useful, 3 is too hot so…2 it is
i see on the oxford website replacment grips are for sale without anything else, no controller etc which i dont need. i went to a shop today and compared the retail packs of oxford grips and the only difference appears to be length.
which grips did you use (touring/adventure/sports) and did you need to trim them?
Not yet mate. Have bought all the connectors and crimping tool. Just haven’t got round to fitting them yet.
i used adventure and yes - i had to trim - so neater to use one of the shorter designs.
I got a complete set (with the old controller) for £75 on Ebay
