Further help with an oil leak

So, I had an issue with an oil leak which I posted on here and got some great help and advice; here I am again with a further request for help with my 850 T3.
Noticed the recurring leak after fitting new oil lines, and it occurred to me that the oil was clear, not black as per combustion products mixed in the crankcase.
Realised it must be from the gear box, so took her for another run and sure enough, got the oil leak; I noticed the oil was collecting on top of the gearbox. Took these photos to help see what was going on and that throws up an immediate question: is there something missing from that hole on the black plate? If so, what is it; please forgive my ignorance here!

The first question to ask is have you got the gearbox breather tube in place? It comes out of the gearbox under the battery tray plate and should just extend up to the left side upper frame rail behind the side panel. It should be open at the end.
You can see it in this photo just above the starter solenoid pointing up to the sky.
Have you checked your gearbox levels to make sure it hasn’t been overfilled. It should be up to the chrome level plug on the side of the gearbox, not up to the level of the brass filler plug.

The hole is in the battery plate, it usually has a rubber mat that sits on it with locating circles that fit the holes in the plate.

Item 24

You can readily get these from most Guzzi spares emporia

Best wishes Chris

Thank you for that! There’s another thing on the shopping list!

Thank you for your reply, sorry it’s taken me a while to acknowledge; wanted to get out in the garage and checks a few things out, so:

  1. Yes the breather tube is connected, and it was a little wet around the end. I did take some advice previously when I had the original leak, and have pointed it skywards towards the underside of the seat which is where I’m told it should point, not laying flat across the gearbox as it used to be!
  2. I think there may be an element of over filling, I had some hand written instructions for the (deceased) previous owner which I may have interpreted incorrectly!
  3. Wasn’t sure about the “chrome” plug you mentioned (may have been chrome once; is not any more!) so while looking it up in the Haynes manual, I saw on the exploded diagram that there is a sealing ring on the filler plug. This is no longer the case, so I don’t think that’s helped either!
New sealer ring on order, along with a check of the correct level of oil and maybe a new level plug!
Thank you so much for the pointers, I have a feeling the problem is diagnosed!!

Park the bike on the centre stand on level ground and remove the bolt indicated with the blue arrow in this photo. The gearbox oil level should be just up to this level. If any flows out, then it is overfilled.

Thank you: that sound like a Sunday afternoon job!
