Can anyone tell me with certainty if the rear of the crankshaft off an automatic Convert engine would take a flywheel and clutch if its engine has the same VG designation as a G5?
Or, is the crankshaft off a convert special to a torque converter in spite of the VG engine prefix?
Guzziology suggests some convert engines might not be compatible which infers the possibility that some might be.
reckon this might be one of those “who really knows” questions but as the g5 was bought out because the convert was not well received i cant see why they would make the crank etc any different to what they fitted to the convert ! why would they want to pay out to tool up and produce different parts instead of just using what they already had.
might be worth spending as hour or two on stein denses site to see if you can look up and maybe cross-reference part numbers.
My Tonti special started as an 850T and had a convert engine fitted over 40 years ago to an 850T gearbox with no problems. Saying that it hasn’t run for 25 years!
yet watching a Youtube video by Tiny Tim doing a refresh on his convert it clearly shows the standard 6 threaded holes in the crankshaft as per a G5 or Spada. Gutsibits reckons it should be possible with an early engine, but the only engine code/designation I can see for a Convert is VG -which is the same as my G5 so I’m wondering how to date such an engine and what the cut off point is between an early and later engine.
The thread in the crank is to take the clutch alignment tool. I dont have one of these and have therefore never used the thread to fit a clutch, so I dont think its a big problem.
Ignore the notes as I used pic before to help someone else out and btw this is my cali but I believe the G5 is the same.
That makes complete sense thank you both. Yes, I too used and old spined centre last clutch change on my G5 and left the basket loose enough to wiggle it central.
Another question is how you dealt with the unneeded ATF pump powered from the camshaft and which protrudes from the front cover? can it be disconnected from behind the cover? Did you need to replace the front cover with a standard one?
