My V7 700 still has its original CEV headlamp unit which would dip to the right if it weren’t for the bit of tape on the lense. It’s legal but I want to change it for a left hand dip more suitable for here.
I’ve tried the two H4 headlamp units I have in the garage - Cibie and Lucas - but both of these are too deep. When you put the lamp together the back of the bulb displaces the fuses mounted at the back of the headlamp shell. It seems that the old units which take a P45T mount bulb will fit fine. I’ve tried a P45T Bosch headlamp which goes in but that’s another right hand dip unit from the 70s.
John - just been working on my 850GT and had a look at headlamp for you. It’s a Cibie H4 unit. It was on the bike when I bought it so don’t know if anything had to be modified to make it fit. To be honest the light output is not great - not bad on main beam but the dip is poor. If you need any more info let me know.

Thanks Ian, that’s interesting. I’ve measured the depth of my headamp to the fuse contacts and have got about 3 1/2 inches to the front of the rim. The depth of the H4 headlamp units I’ve tried have been about that once you’ve got the plug on the back of the bulb. It has got the shortest sort of plug with the wires coming out of the side. There were two different depth headlamp shells so perhaps mine is the shorter one.
I’ve been told over on Guzziriders that someone has managed to get a Wipac Quadoptic unit to fit. He has the same clearance as me and measured the lamp as being shallower than the ones I’ve got. I’ve invested my 30 quid and ordered one. We’ll see.
The Wipac H4 headlamp unit has arrived and it fits! I’ve measured the headlamp units I have and have come up with this. Dimensions are from the face that fits in the headlamp rim to the back of the bulb contacts.
