Having a problem tracing/working out how the petrol tank on
my California EV vents.
Yes I see the breather pip in the filler nick once the tank
cap and its versus parts are removed,
but I can’t work out how the tank vents to this breather pip once the filler cap and its parts are in
place

I assume its through the cap, I have had this in bits and there is nothing in it to indicate that it would be airtight, in fact if you brim the tank on a warm day, by the time you have paid a petrol nut-bath will be waiting for you.

Since posting this I have
now read that the pipe that is in the tank filler pressing, that exists out the bottom
of the tank is in fact a water drain? Could be as there no way the tank can
vent to it once the caps in place.
So as you point out
it must be though the cap itself.
But there does not appear

This is an interesting post for me too. I am also having trouble with the petrol filler cap on my Vintage. Yes, mine has also spewed fuel from the cap, after filling on cool days and on hotter days. This is very annoying but for obvious reasons, also highly dangerous! I thought initially, that I was over-filling but this doesn’t seem to be the case. Yes, on these occasions I have filled the tank but not over-filled. I have taken the rubber seal off and cleaned it but this made no difference. I also wondered if this could be a venting issue. Often, when I release the filler cap, there is an audible ‘pfahhh’ sound, consistent with air being released under pressure. This suggests to me that pressure build-up, caused by poor venting could be the culprit?
Having gone out to find fuel dripping down the side towards the still rather warm pot I’m now very careful about how and when I fill the tank.
I never try to fill it brim full.
Normally, I only fill up on the way out so the level has dropped by the time I get back. If I fill up with the bike on the centrestand then the bike only gets parked on the centrestand.
Interestingly, apart from that one incident, I’ve never had even a whiff of petrol around the bike.
If it’s like the LeMans mk 1 cap then there’s two holes in the neoprene seal that allow the tank to vent. If the neoprene has hardened then the cap itself will leak.
Have the rules changed about how new motorcycle tanks are vented? I know that for some time car fuel tanks are not allowed to vent to atmosphere, instead there’s some system where it’s vented via the inlet manifold so that it’s effectively a sealed system. Is there any chance similar mechanism is provided in this case
