I have bench tested two of the four coils on my bike which appear to have failed. They are proper to a Triumph T150 Trident but I was wondering if a more modern alternative might be better. Does anyone have any suggestions please?
I am also pretty desperate for the wiring diagram for a Newtronic electronic ignition as there is some confusion over the feeds to my piggyback coil set up. the bike was rewired years ago and, of course none of the colours match!
I’m sure I have a couple of new twin output coils that came with a Lario I bought many years ago. One coil body with 2 HT output leads. That must be simpler to use.
I have a Newtronics on my Spada & have a wiring diagram for it up in the garage.
I will have a look around for you later.
Thanks so much, this is really very helpful and yes, I was wondering about swapping out for two coils with twin outputs. Thanks again
I use twin lead coils on my bike Dyna coils, they are green and plastic! I made the mistake of getting lower resistance ones after some great advice but they mealted! Salvador Dali clock style, not funny as they cost a load of money 30 years ago.
They are 3 Ohm with a reference 2/94 on them. I use Newtronic ignition too.
Best of luck Chris
Many thanks for this Chris, I will look into dyna coils. The thing that puzzles me is that there was no ignition issue whatsoever prior to me laying the bike up a couple of years ago prior to recommissioning it. It seems a hell of a coincidence that the coils should have failed …
Maybe before you laid the bike up you left the ignition on for a while and the coils heated up. That’s how mine melted but they were the wrong resistance
Apologies for the delay Chris, I’ve been giving this a lot of thought and I now remember that when I first fitted my new battery a few weeks back I forgot to turn the ignition off and left it on overnight. I have just done primary and secondary checks and am getting no readings of any of the four coils. Bearing in mind that these coils are appropriate to T150 Trident it could easily be the case that resistance is incorrect. It looks like a £150 error…
The strange thing was that I was getting 12v at one of the coils at first but it seems consistent from what I have seen from a failing unit.
That was the same as me, with the wrong impeadance (Ohms) coils if I left the ignition on, one of them would get so hot it melted the plastic casing. I finally got the impeadance right and they were fine after that. I think they were £30 each 30 years ago and I melted two before I did some research and bought the correct ones, so that was 5 coils in total!
Best of luch with your set up. Chris
