Ahoyhoy, I’m Antony a new member living in Darwen Lancashire, I’ve got myself a 1996 California 1100i (love it) with a strange issue with the indicators, they work normally until I turn on the dip/main beam, then they go at half speed ! Is there anybody out there with any ideas as to what the solution may be ? Any help will be most welcome.
Cheers Ant
Bad earth somewhere.
Already checked out for bad earth connections, none found, could it be anything to do with the flasher unit ? I’ve studied the wiring diagram and finding the link between the indicators and the dip/main beam is quite difficult. I’ll check out the earth issues again, fingers crossed I could have missed something. Any more suggestions are welcome.
Cheers
Good luck,and let us know.
I have a California EV …love my Cali.Year round riding too.Relay?
What is the battery power like? A headlight at around 55w is a big draw on the battery capacity.
Is it the same with the engine running?
As far as I can see the only earths in the indicator circuits are from the lamps themselves, the front pair to a common earth that includes the idiot lights and clocks and the rear pair to a common earth from the rear light cluster. It is unlikely that these earths will be affected by the headlight dip switch.
More likely is the left hand switch gear and it’s connection to the loom. The connector block has both the indicator and the dip wires, if there is a bad connection or a strand or strands of wire crossing between dip (green/grey wire) and the feed from the flasher unit (orange wire) this could be causing the problem.
Take the connector apart and clean the contacts, if you have a multimeter test the wires for any connectivity between the headlamp and the indicators.
Best of luck!
Thanks for that Chris950s, this is definitely something worth looking into, I’m not good enough with electrics to do this myself but I know a man that can, I’ll let you know what the results are.

I have not drawn this model’s wiring diagram as yet but I do have a workshop manual with a feint copy. I will put it on the list of ones to draw. See my thread here
Let me know if you would like any further information.
Best wishes Chris
might be worth cleaning the fuseholders and fuses, also measure the battery voltage as you turn the headlight on, I presume with the engine running
just in case the alternator is not pulling its weight
is the battery in good order ?
and are there any signs of the wiring harness being tampered with ?
