I’d like to replace my Le Mans III headlight with a H4 unit, I have heard that the Fiat 126/127 headlights are the same as the original MG units, I’m not sure if that’s true. Does anyone know if the Fiat headlights are a straight swap?
I have heard the same, but wouldn’t like to say for sure if it would work.
There is a standard Guzzi unit for sale on fleabay if any interest to you.
If the LMIII headlight is the same as the Lario headlight unit (???), then yes I believe it will fit. I swapped the headlight out on my Lario for a Fiat unit more than 20 years ago following a bit of unplanned tarmac surfing.
My actual headlight is in good shape, the nylon clips are badly worn but I’ve found new replacement ones, that should cure the wobbly headlight, I’ve also found an adapter to convert from the old tungsten bulb P45T fitting to a more modern H4 halogen bulb P43T fitting. Hopefully that’ll sort out my headlight woes
However it would still be nice to know as Fiat 126 headlights are plentiful and usually priced lower than MG replacement headlights.
Cheers, Don.
Quick update in case anyone else has similar headlight issues, the Fiat headlight nylon fittings work perfectly, 5 minute job and the wobbly headlight is no more, it’s now rock solid, the fittings are Fiat 126, 127, 128, 131 Strada Ritmo Lancia, at least that’s what it says on the invoice.
The adapter also fitted perfectly so now I’m running a H4 bulb in the original headlight.
Cheers, Don.
Could you provide the link for the H4 adapter and fiat nylon fittings parts?
Is the H4 noticeably brighter, any charging or heat issues? I was wondering of a similar swap with an h4 or LED too.
Thanks
Hi Steph,
The “standard” H4 is somewhat brighter, but the real reason in wanting to convert to H4 are they are less prone to blowing than the rather feeble (by today’s standards) tungsten bulbs and unlike the tungsten bulbs the choice of H4 bulbs is huge, you can purchase cheap 55w H4’s or numerous high performance H4’s and higher wattage H4’s up to 100w also a great selection of LED’s if you want to go down that road.
I purchased everything I needed from Classic Car LED’s https://www.classiccarleds.co.uk
P45A P45T R2 H5 HB12 410 to P43T H4 BULB ADAPTER
I also purchased
12VT5NRED 286 T5 LED DASHBOARD UPGRADE BULBS T5 74 VARIOUS COLOURS - great upgrade, the warning lights are now completely visible in daylight
Also - 12VT10CANGR GLB504 T10 LED Capless Wedge Bulbs Classic Car Gauge Dashboard Various Colours - for the flasher warning lights, now they’re also very visible
Also - 12VBA9HPWHN BA9S BRIGHT WHITE 200 LUMEN T4W 233 LED DRL SIDELIGHT UPGRADE BULB LLB233 LLB989 - now I can run my much brighter side light as a “DRL” without worrying about the pull on the system running the headlight during the day.
I found Duncan from Classic car LED’s is very helpful, I’m now waiting for LED taillights and LED bulbs for the gauges.
The headlight clips I bought on eBay, there were a few suppliers I got mine from here

Long post, hope it’s helpful Cheers, Don.
Many thanks for the information!
I’ll start looking into it.
Like your old nylon fittings, mine have loosen considerably and are now ‘tighten up’ with various size cable ties…
