Le Mans mk2

Quick introduction……….bought a complete(apart from fairing) 1980 mk2 off a mate that has been laid up for 35 years….reasonable condition(motor runs)but not tidy enough to just clean up…sadly.

So complete stripdown and rebuild.

What would the finish be on the frame? gloss, matt or satin

Also notice the footrest brackets and handle seem to be powder coated

Any other advice on finishes/coatings would be appreciated

Thx in advance

The frame etc would originally have been satin black paint, maybe the footrests and other parts have been powder coated in the past. The seat is aftermarket, but very period, so I wouldn’t worry about that.
This is what a new one looked like many years ago. Most bikes have had the fairing lowers removed to give a bit more leg room.

Thx satin it is.

I have another seat which I think was original which I will be using as the aftermarket has some damage.

So the foot brackets and hand grab would originally been sprayed?

Yes, all the black parts would have been painted in the factory. Powder coat is a pretty good option, parts of my bike have been done where the original paint had worn or flaked.

I have had my frame and some cycle parts powder coated satin black, anything I missed I use a satin black rattle can. Personally I think it looks better (and matches the original finish) as gloss finish on a 50 year old bike looks far too bling for my taste.

Best wishes Chris

Black Hammerite smooth also gives a pretty good satin finish that matches the factory paint well.
