Le mans needle position

I hadn’t thought of asking my mate for a loan of his carbs! Good thinking Reggie … Float heights are 23.5 as standard. Everything in the carb is standard bar the needle which is a K20(apologies for repeating myself)…Big bore 950cc lafranconi pipes, electronic ignition and straight cut timing gears and k&N’s. I did read or hear of some one with the same mods going up in jet size. I think I’ll do a plug chop tomorrow and see what happens. Anybody got an axe?..I must check fuel flow too. I did ditch the crossover pipe and now have double outlets on each carb from the tank with the carbs joined(does that make sense?)
Anyway for your perusal my mock 1 with my friends mk1…At least it looks good

Just as a matter of interest, I’ve had two guzzis which ran a bit like yours when I got them. one had imitation K+Ns on which were needed a good clean and the main jets were too big, the other was a small block with K+Ns and main jets that were too small. When it’s warm will it rev with the filters off?

Yes revs nicely without the k and Ns…I did clean them using proper cleaner and oil…Do you think I should give her a whirl without them on?

Deffo. Bike looks lovely by the way…

Over 3/4 throttle, it’s the main jet which controls the mixture, needle size and position normally only controls 1/4 to 3/4.So it’s the main jet which you should be looking at. If it does better with the filters removed, then you would need smaller main jets.

Pretty sure LM 1 factory jetting was without filters -just plastic bellmouths…this could be the problem as the filter is restrictive so logically you need to jet down not up.

Thanks for all the input guys. I just ran the bike without the air filters and guess what? It pulled like a train to well over three figures until I ran out of road with plenty left! So happy with that… I don’t even think these filters are genuine k&n’s…they don’t have any stamping on them? I did see similar ones on the net from S and B(I think)…and they should be run dry…mine are drenched with proper k&n recharger oil…Cant believe how restrictive they were.

Here are the filters on the bike. Anyone know what make they are? Should I put on proper k&n’s and jet down or go for just the original trumpets?

At least now I know this is the problem area so I can play with jets and needles in good time.

An eres me thinkin I said this in me original post…
on page 1…

You and Chris a … OK there you are then. They do look like they could be 'K&N’s lookalikes you can get off ebay and such ~ so can’t be certain. Obviously can’t get enough air through at the top end so going mega rich I’m guessing. The T3/Spada/Cali/etc. K&N filters have MUCH bigger surface area. Trouble is filters keep grit and suchlike nasties out of your engine. Did have filters like these on mine for a while, but got worn through against the front edges of the side panels.

Oh electronic ignition then? Which one?

Oh right it is then. Rita?

Yes Mike Lucas rita…And thanks Guykate, I know you mentioned the bellmouths and filters in your first post, my apologies I was not ignoring your suggestion(or anyone elses) I just needed to try a few other things first like the choke cables… Thanks to everyone, I knew you lot would sort it

Glad its sorted and I was only jesting young man…
Tis oft the simplest of things…
Having started to rebuild my green un with my race motor, Guy popped the speedo drive back in, before we offered up the swing arm he just happened to turn the uj, the bike being in neutral. It was incredibly stiff…that can’t be right he said. To show me we dug the old motor out from under the stairs. T’was indeed much freer…
Thinkin we had better have the box off and have a look, he then had a eureka moment and undid the speedo drive…fractionally too long and acting like a grub screw… thicker washer underneath and voila !

FWIW when I fit K&Ns I apply the filter oil and then wash them thoroughly in petrol (usual safety rules apply) This seems to give a good balance between filtration and air flow.
How many miles are you doing/planning to do? Guzzis do seem to do OK on open carbs.
Best of luck
Steve

the look like the sb filters on my t5

Mike H wrote;Did have filters like these on mine for a while, but got worn through against the front edges of the side panels

I’ve fitted some K&N filters onto my LM ( the ones recommended by Gutsibits) and on the left side the filter is rubbing the side panel, despite shortening the rubber section that attaches to the carb.

I have only fitted the K&Ns about 200 miles ago previously having bell-mouths on, and what I have noticed is that the engine bogs down a bit now on low to medium revs before revving into the red beautifully…so a bit of re-jetting is called for if I want to make it perfect. You have been warned

I’m pleased you’ve got to the bottom of it. ReggieV2013-12-17 20:42:58

had lots of probs fitting filters to my t5 and ended up trimming the side panel on left hand side to clear the filter

Yep had to trim the side panel on the V1000 BUT the Leeee mannsis have different, smaller side panels I reckon it MUST be the main jets, they are not that expensive so talk to euro carbs and try some 10% UP and others 5% lower …see worrappens as tis a quick and easy thing to do save alot of hair pulling and suchlike

I thought we established take the filters off and it goes like the proverbial chat ébouillanté
Thinkin we had better have the box off and have a look, he then had a eureka moment and undid the speedo drive…fractionally too long and acting like a grub screw… thicker washer underneath and voila !Problemmo solvatore x
Cripes!
