MGCT query V7 IV Stone

Newbie here again! I have been going over the settings on my second hand 2021 V7. The manual seems to suggest that the ‘normal’ MGCT setting is ‘1’ and ‘2’ is for rain. My bike was set to ‘2’ and a previous 2022 special I test rode was also set to ‘2’. The dealer thought ‘2’ was the normal setting. Does anyone know? What settings are other owners using? Many thanks for the help :grinning:

Hi. My 2022 V7 was set to ‘1’ from new and I’ve never tried ‘2’. Position ‘1’ seems fine for my day-to-day riding and has never done anything unexpected or caused any concerns.

Tony

Thanks for the info. As soon as it stops raining, I’ll give it a go. I wasn’t too worried. My old Speed Triple is chucking out more power with no rider aids but as I had never experienced traction control I didn’t know what I didn’t know …
Thanks again

I think that mode 2 is generally where a dealer sets it from new as it’s the softer power delivery and maximum traction control. If you switch to mode 1 the delivery more immediate and (I believe), power is up and traction control set to a minimum.

Basically after playing with both modes when I first got it just to see the difference, I leave it in mode 1 all the time and just forget about the unnecessary gimmick (I’m old school and grew up with bikes that never had ABS, much less traction control, you just learned how to change gear and brake properly!).

You can turn the traction control completely off and get a bit more power and more directness in delivery but you get the immensely irritating, Guzzi lawyer induced warning, flashing constantly on the dash to tell you that you’ve turned it off! You’ll quickly get tired of that and stick to mode 1 .

Thanks Samurai, if it ever stops raining here I’ll see what ‘1’ feels like. Same as you, though, the most intervention I have had previously is ABS but I don’t think I’d ever got that to cut in! Thanks again. I appreciate all the info.

It does kind of make sense, for while it’s running in. Mine is still set at 2, as I figured it’s probably preferable for hauling a sidecar. Someday I’m going to have to try 1.

I found very little difference between 1 and 2. The throttle is a cable so no rider modes having impacts on power delivery it’s just how sensitive the TC is to cut the spark plugs for a couple of rotations. You’ll be hard pressed to notice any difference.

Thanks Ramsaye. It looks like I may get out on it today so I’ll see if I notice a difference. Cheers

Hi all. I was on a ride today and pulled in to a lay-by to change mine from 2 which it was set at the dealers to 1. To be honest, I have had the V7 for a couple of weeks and whilst loving it, I had come from a triumph speed triple with ride by wire throttle and was struggling getting used to the V twin lethargy when pushed. Changed it to 1, immediately forgot I had as I then made a phone call, five minutes later I set off from the lay by. The bike took me by surprise as I found the change instantly noticeable as I was getting my groove on and was puzzled until I remembered I’d changed the flaming setting :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:. The change made it a much smoother ride and just made the whole V7 experience much much better for me.

I played with the settings for a couple of weeks when I first got my 850 Stone and came to the same conclusion as you. Mode 1 is a bit more direct in power delivery and seemingly slightly more powerful too using my empiracle ‘seat of the pants’ measuring device .

I also disliked the fact that Mode 2 also increases the Traction Control sensitivity and that made coming into my village, which has raised ‘rumble strips’ annoyingly jerky as the bike seemed to think that it needed to intervene and rapidly/repeatedly cut the ignition which just exacerbated the obvious rapid bumps from the lines.

I briefly played with turning the MGCT off altogether and whilst this felt a smidge more powerful still, I quickly got annoyed with the constantly flashing warning and the fact that it turns the Traction Control back on as soon as you turn the ignition off.

Ever since then I’ve just left it in Mode 1 and forgotten about it! If it were really hoofing it down, then I can maybe see the point of the softer Mode 2 but I’m a firm believer that if you anticipate and ride smoothly, then in the vast majority of situations rider ‘aids’ are a waste of time.

Haha I’m the same with turning it off. Too much flashing and big brother shouting. As with you mate, I will just leave it now and get used to it. :grinning::motorcycle:.
