Nasty noise. - G5

Thanks. I had a trial refit this morning. With the stator in place then fitted the rotor, but of course due to the rotor being a permanent magnet, it was drawn off centre, sticking to the stator. Maybe this caused it to seat at a slight skew.
The rotors surface is smooth and does not seem to have damaged the stator at all. I am sure that being a magnet, when the rotor came loose it did not rotate, but was held to the stator, leaving the tip of the crank’s taper to rotate inside and damage the internal taper of the rotor.
The crank’s taper seems to be Ok. But the rotor’s taper has ridges and furrows you can feel with a finger.
When I had refitted the rotor, pulling it into place with the bolt, I measured the clearance between stator and rotor. I found 8 thou on one side, and up to 25 thou on the other. Rotating the crank shows that the wobble is in the rotor.
I’m going to have another go now, fitting the rotor without the stator in place, hoping I can seat the rotor naturally on its taper (or what’s left of it) without magnetism dragging it to one side. Clutching at straws I suspect, but its worth a try.
Enduralast say the have rotors in stock and they understand the deadline I’m working to

Can you not mount and screw down the rotor first without the stator?

Myself I wouldn’t trust bodging it back on the crank. Get a new rotor. What price peace of mind.

Yep. I just tried mounting the rotor without the stator in place. No marked improvement.
Bit the bullet and ordered a replacement. Already on the way via Fed Ex. Enduralast split the cost of the shipping upgrade. A nice touch.
As said, what price piece of mind? especially with not only my godson’s hopes, but my own, of an imminent epic trip to be enjoyed.
He is 15. We’ve been doing these jaunts together since he was 12. He’s a bright lad and is great company, and of course, he’s counting the weeks until he can get a 50 next year.

Thanks Duffo

I’ll check it tomorrow AM and lets hope it doesn’t do it so it was a stone in the calliper or I’m not off to the Buell & Italian Motorcycle Festival @ East Kirkby

Hijack Off

If it was shipped Friday it should be with you Monday mate you can check on the FedEx site and pop in the tracking number once it is cleared STN …next scan ill bi in the station then on van …most international deliveries in most areas are done before noon that day UNLESS it is shipped “economy” then it could be PM.

New rotor arrived Tuesday and securely installed.
FedEx tracking system is good, but its a bit galling to see it sitting static in a depot in Memphis, all Saturday & Sunday!.
Bike is now running and charging Ok. The new rotor fitted easily and positively with at least a 15 thou air gap all around.
So the bike is ready, apart from one last effort at bleeding the linked brakes. Working Ok, but pedal not quite firm enough. So looking forward now to a 25 day trip, starting from Harwich Sunday night. Germany, Czech Rep. Vienna, Austrian Alps, Dolomites, Eastern Switzerland, Italian Lakes, French Alps, France, and my nephew’s campsite in Brittany, and home again. Should be enough to sort out any teething problems.

Yeah we do NOT work weekends bud, still civilized see.
