Hi, I’ve just rejoined the club after many years away. I live in the Derby area, having moved from Watford a couple of years ago.
I rode bikes in the 1970’s, finally buying a V50II in 1979 … which is still sitting in the garage looking very unloved. I stopped riding it when family came along in the mid-80s and it hasn’t even got a V5C.
So before it is too late I would like to get it going again, rather than consign it to the scrap heap.
I suspect I may be asking for advice as the project progresses. Any ideas on where to start will be very welcome!
After that filter and oil, strip and clean all the gum and sh1te out of the carbs, new battery (obvs), tyres then (being a v50ii) it has electronic ignition - probably good bur if it does not spark it is dead
Many thanks all for the excellent advice. Generally very encouraging and I promise not to scrap it! I think I will start by changing oil and filters and see whether engine will turn. Then clean out fuel system including carbs and replace hoses. New battery and see whether electrics work. If so attempt to get engine to run (lots of ifs and buts there!). In the end I know I will still need to strip it and there are other major items to tackle like brakes, tyres and rusty silencers.
I also plan to kick off the process through the club to get a V5C with the original registration number - I do still have the old style registration document.
Welcome back…
Not got a V50 but believe dropping teh sump is n easy job so I’d be inclined to do that to clean out all the crap that may have gravitated there. Give you a chance to clean the wire gauze filter too. I’m just up the road, near Ashbourne, and can recommend both local sections - Derby/Notts and Staffies - very active. Cheers, Rob
Check to see if the registration number is still live on the DVLA system. If it is, then you just need to apply for a replacement log book. I think it s a form V62 you need to fill in and send to Swansea. https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/?locale=en
Many thanks for the advice on V5C. I did find online that the registration number is still active in my name so I applied for and received a new V5C. I was then able to apply for tax as an historic vehicle at the post office and have today received updated V5C with changed taxation class. The local post office weren’t familiar with the process but followed the instructions on their system and it all worked fine. Now I have to get the bike working and roadworthy….
