New members start here. How d'you work this thing?

Hello from Andy in Cornwall (and hi to the chap who phoned me up the other day about my half complete membership application… thanks for the nudge, now done).

I’ve got a1981 V50 and I’ve had it for 2 years. It was an ebay barn find and looked like a farm bike. It came with water in the cylinders and oily soil in the clutch housing. It looks like it started off life as a Monza but has later been given a Mk1 or 2 petrol tank and seat. Some parts were missing or beyond help but most were okay.

I’ve had it apart and put it all back together again with some new and second-hand bits. I’ve had it out on the road and it goes well and sounds lovely but now it’s got to come apart once again as the gearbox isn’t right (and I should have had more sense than to chance it). When that’s done it should be finally sorted and we’ll be able to enjoy getting out and about on it properly!

Welcome to the forum, I hope the gearbox is not a major problem!

Thanks! I’ve been watching Mr Bill Giles on You Tube and have some pictures so hopefully it’ll be okay! (I’m trying to attach photos but can’t see the icon).

Hi, I’m new to Guzzi’s and wanted one for years too. I’m 63 and live near Truro and I have been putting a '78 V35 together for the last 2 years with help from an engineer friend. Mine was a mixture of parts and a mishmash of electrics and had spent some time outside.
It has run but needs setting up and, hopefully, it will be on the road for the spring.
Who is Mr Bill Giles? I presume not the weather forecaster?

Hi Neil, no, he’s not the weather man! …My mistake, if you go to You Tube, search for mr billgiles (with no space between the bill and giles). And he should come up with his rebuild work on a V65, similar to the V35s and V50s. I thought he was very good!

Mind you, from what you’ve written, you seem to be past that stage. I managed to buy a workshop manual on ebay with a wiring diagram which I think you may also be able to download, I paid for a download rebuild guide from Classic & Motorcycle Mechanics, downloaded the complete parts list and the ‘Charging through the Circuit’ by John Noble.

I think many if not all of these things have been signposted here before, but if needed I might be able to find how to get hold of them again (files to big to email I’m afraid). All the best meanwhile! cheers, Andy

(PS, I’m sure a lot if what I’ve referred to is already very common knowledge here, so I’m sorry if I’ve stepped on anyone’s toes).

Hello Veefifty, I can supply my own wiring diagram for your bike, see here, either as A3 laminated copy for the workshop or as a pdf file for your computer, tablet or phone. Let me know via PM if you would like either or both.

Best wishes Chris

Hi Neil, not sure if you got my reply as I probably put it in the wrong place. …It’s billgiles (no space between bill giles). He took apart and rebuilt a V65 engine on You Tube and he came across very well. Hope you manage to get your bike finished off okay. Still a bit to do on mine! Cheers, Andy

Hi Chris, very kind. Yes, I would like one please (although I admit I’ve already mucked about a bit with mine). A pdf would be good and maybe I could buy an A3 one later on. I’m at [email obscured by moderator]. cheers (let me know of any cost involved!) Ta.

Hi Andy, I’ve had a quick look but I haven’t watched any yet. They do look really good.
I’m playing with the rear/front braking system at the mo’ but it’s jolly cold in my shed so brief visits only.

Yes, he’s got a nice way about him and his chit-chatting as he gets to grips with the various tasks are interesting! And yes, it’s bitter in Pensilva and I’m waiting for it to improve before I take mine apart again (plus I’m working on my house unfortunately). Cheers.
