Hi all, I have recently purchased a 1981 UK spec V50 mk11 bike and keen to learn as much as I can about my new machine. I have a couple of questions that I hope someone can answer.
1 It has a red frame and not black as most others I have seen, any reason for this?
2 How many V50 were built?
Obviously now were in the cold season I have some time to go through the bike in the garage so if there’s anything that I should be aware of I would really appreciate your advice.
Many thanks
Alby
Hello Alby and welcome to the forum. As far as I am aware red frames were factory race shop bikes of 850/1000 cc and so someone may have painted it to make it look fast! I maybe wrong and it is in fact original, you will have to wait for an enlightened V50 expert to verify all this. Best wishes
Hi Alby and welcome. I’m sure I answered this the other day, but it must have got lost somewhere!
Never heard of an original red framed V50, it will be 40 years and and a lot can happen in the past years. The V50 was a very popular bike in the late 70’s, early 80’s and there would have been a lot of them made.

Where abouts in the country are you? Maybe someone local could pop along and take a look at your bike to offer any assistance.
Hi Don, many thanks for your reply. I live near Daventry but as the winter is closing in it will be a while before a good road test takes place so hope all is in good order. I’ve been riding for 40 years and only ever owned 1 MG in the past and that was a modern V7 so looking forward to getting to know an older model. Alby
I’m not a million miles away, Market Harborough. I’m more familiar with the big block models, but know a bit about the small blocks. Happy to pop over sometime and take a look if you want. I’m retired so time isn’t an issue for me.
Get some warmer weather and hopefully we can grab a coffee and a meet up somewhere.
Welcome to the fold Alby. I restored one years ago. They are a lovely bike and easy to work on. Enjoy!
I live near West Haddon and bought my V50 II at the end of June. I gave it a very thorough service and check over after purchase and have now ridden it nearly 1500 miles. They are lovely bikes, steer beautifully and although not super fast are ideal for our minor roads.
I am always willing to have a chat. I know of three others in the area.
