Norge 1200 8v oil from breather pipe

Hi, been running the bike on motorway/distance and it has developed a leak of oil from a breather pipe down onto the cross box, where it has been gently burning off! can’t see anything obvious, where to start? it hasn’t got onto the rear tyre yet and there are no obvious leaks other than this.

If possible a pic of the offending pipe would be great. I have it in mind that it’s the “reservoir” pipe, which should be plugged, rather than spill onto the road. On my 1200 Griso it’s a clear pipe next to the petrol/rain overflow pipe (also clear) but hard to guess. Cheers.

So, it’s not from the pipes that I can see, they are all dry, including the plugged one, it’s from a spigot in the bottom of the airbox on the back left of the box. which looks like it has dripped down and onto the exhaust, covering everything on its way! Should this have a pipe on it? Also, reading on here, is this common to have oil in the airbox?

Yes it should have a pipe with a plug on the end to stop unfiltered air getting to the engine. (Le Mans 1 owners look away)

BUT that pipe drains the airbox and if it is dripping it means that the bike has been blowing oil into the airbox. Hopefully just overfilled with oil?

On the CARC engines the top mark on the dipstick is High not Correct

Right, will check if a random pipe is lurking in the depths! Oil level dropped in the meantime!

On GRiSOs there is a 4 screw plate that lets you look into the airbox. If you can see in on a Norge and there is a puddle of oil in the bottom then…

One day… you will want to clean the oily gum out of the airways in the throttle bodies - it makes synchronisation work and slow speed running much nicer

I agree. It’s a pipe that has come off the air box. You should be able to locate the pipe. Once found it’s easier in the short term to secure with a small cable tie . I find that it can be a faff to re-attach or replace if serviceable, the steel clip.

After a load of entertainment finding the pipe and getting to it, goodness who designed this delightful feature??? then replacing, all good. Pipe replaced, oil level dropped, all good many thanks for help!

The Oil Level on the 1200 Engines is around mid-way between the upper and lower marks on the Dipstick.
They will settle at their own level after a while, some higher than midway, some lower.
Keep a regular check on the Level (every 4-500 miles), and don’t add any if it’s somewhere between the Marks.
