Norge 1200 8V possibly running lean

I am not a fan of the trumpet style exhaust and was considering an aftermarket can.
The previous owner had de catted the bike and fitted a hi flo air filter. i pulled one of the plugs today and it looks Grey as opposed to Dark or Tan. When I asked him if he had tuned the bike he said he was told it would not be necessary.
Any thoughts or advice please as I do not know these engines, but I do know a lean one is not a good one, Cheers

As the fault is likely to cause the engine to run hot, and possibly pop a piston, would you not be better taking it to a professional, who can check the fuel /air ratios and exhaust gases and set it up correctly ? might cost you a few quid but far cheaper in the long run

That colour sounds about right, the 8v motor has quite a lean map and I have never seen what I would call a normal spark plug colour.

Would suggest using the normal paper filter - though they aren’t cheap and I haven’t found an alternative supplier yet.

Yes I can get one for £21 off ebay and had thought I would do that to restrict the airflow a bit.
Cheers. I will say the bike does not seem to exhibit any issues, it starts and idles cleanly and revs smoothly also, so no obvious issues regarding fuel. I did 250 miles at 80 odd on the motorway on Sunday and still have both pistons so … new bike paranoia :grinning:

Yes, I have already put a call in to a dealer. But my experience sometimes tell me they are not always what they claim to be. Often these forums throw up people who work on them and know them better than those who sell them.

That is not unique to the motorycle trade !!, as an electrician I have seen some terrible things carried out by big companies
I actually meant to say a small specialist, I use Tony Botto at Didcot below Oxford, as well as being a race Marshall, he also races very competitively , he certainly knows his stuff
thats why my Guzzi goes there, a round trip of 80 miles, because he is a consummate professional

Spark plugs were only ‘tan’ or brown coloured with leaded petrol, with unleaded, grey is normal. White indicates too lean, black, too rich.
