Norge 1200 8V - won't run above tickover

A couple of weeks ago I lost all power apart from tickover. It happened as I was accelerating to overtake having had a fun ride to that point. Engine was fully up to temperature and it came out of the blue. Since then it will start and run at tickover with no stuttering but if I try opening the throttle it bogs down and would stall if I didn’t let go of the throttle.
Any ideas?

Hi, I had a similar problem with a 1200 Stelvio. Turned out to be a blocked fuel pump inlet strainer. The strainer should be straight and protrude from the fuel pump inlet like a flag. In my case it had been sucked back towards the pump and was completely folded up. The strainer was teased out, cleaned and all returned to normal. Whilst going through this operation it is worth replacing the the fuel filter. Most fiddly part of the job is separating the fuel “quick disconnect” inert the petrol tank. Cheers Phil

Dear Phil, Thank you for your reply. It turned out to be something else. I will update the initial request.

I found out the cause of the fault and the cause of the cause. It turned out that the connecting rod across the LH and RH throttle bodies linking the open of the air flap had dropped off one end.
The root root cause was an oil leak over the summer holidays which sprayed oil over the ball and socket joints. These became soaked and the socket expanded and lost it’s retention to the ball.
Massive design error by M-G in having the socket hanging below the ball. Reversed would have seen gravity hold the rod in place (and stop oil getting in).

Good to hear you’re sorted, can you do anything to prevent a reoccurrence.?

Glad you found the problem and fixed it. What was the cause of the oil leak. Was it from failed rocker box breather pipes. I have made up replacement pipes that cost about half the price of the originals. Cheers Phil

Hi, this was my solution to the connecting rod. D

rill a hole and modify an old spring to make a clip. (first time trying to post a photo, hope it works).

Hello Phil, I should have confirmed that it wasn’t from recently failed breather pipes as I have a pair of yours fitted (via your son in Northampton). But, it could well have been carried over from the previous pipes.

hello KingOrry, I drilled a couple of holes in the socket and ran some lockwire over the top of the ball part. Did both ends and resolved not to wack the throttle against the stops.

Hello MaxRevs, the picture came through fine and although I have just seen it I did exactly the same thing. Great minds and all that….

I had this happen, Replaced with some carp ball joints off ebay. Beware If you replace the rod and ball joint the length has to be exact . If not it akin to adjusting the sacred screw ..

Sounds like the Thottle Position Indicator Potentiometer has a problem. Located under the RH throttle body.
