As I’m about to purchase two side covers that will need painting, how can I best define the paint that I need?
The colour is a scarlet red, from a 1981 V50 Monza.
Is there a code that will define this colour to a paint manufacturer?

There are no real paint codes known for bikes of this era. RS bike paints do offer a service, but chances are your other parts will have faded over time.
Many car painters or dent specialists will be able to colour match your tank to get a match.
Alternatively walk around a car park to find a car colour that matches, I did this for one of my bikes and ended up with a standard Ford red.
Coincidentally, it’s quite similar to my Porsche 924, which is painted “Guards Red".
Maybe I’ll just go with that.
