Potential new V85 owner

Morning All
The roads round where i live aren’t clever, so I’m thinking of selling the V9 and getting a V85

Are there any common issues i should be aware of

Secondly, im 14st 4lb in my gear, and have a 29" inside leg
Anyone out there of similar dimensions, an do you find the bike tall?
Whatif needed can be done to lowervthe bike

Hi Tris - I’ve also got an inside leg measurement of 29" so the bike was very tippy toes for me. Step 1 was to remove the rubber bungs from under the seat. Step 2 Got the comfort low seat - made a little difference but the thinking is the issue is less the height of the seat than the shape/width which forces your legs out. So I fitted a hyperpro spring - brilliant and half the price of the ‘low’ seat - reduced seat height by an inch. Note the bike is almost vertical on the side stand from standard. So you need to cut a piece out of the side stand to compensate when fitting the hyperpro spring. Can now flat foot.

I just want to be clear in my head that if I struggle with the height i can make the bike work for me with a bit of cunning

Have removed the rear preload and replaced with a part from Germany so keeping the full suspension travel and lowering 25mm. Front lowered 16 mm and seat remodelled and rubber washer under seat removed. Side stand cut by 20mm should have been 30mm. Similar height and can flat foot.

The V9 decided to have a faulty crank sensor yesterday, so once i get that sorted out I’ll be on the market for the V85

Does the Hyperpro spring reduce the suspension travel.
I bought this bike to cope with the bad roads and want to keep the full travel. How does it ride over bumps compared with the original.

Hi Mike - haven’t noticed any problem with spring travel. Personally I’m really happy with the hyperpro.

Thanks I couldn’t see the travel on the spec so assumed the spring is shorter. On my modified original shock the adjuster is removed and replaced with a shorter collar so the same spring travel but no preload option and 25 mm lower.

Suspension movement range is set by the length of damper rod that can go into the damper body, from extended to closed. Shortening the spring, reducing pre-load or changing the preload collar will all use up more suspension sag resulting in less travel from the rider-sag level.

The question is whether that is enough of a change to matter.

You can’t have massive suspension travel on a shaft drive bike as the flexible joints will get unhappy

Just lowered mine 18mm at the front and lowest preload at back. Seat is too wide for me to properly flat foot - but it is better.

The impact on side stand lean is a reduction from 14 degrees of lean to 12 degrees of lean.
The impact on centre-stand less: the rear wheel is now 2mm further off the floor

I don’t understand the effect of reducing the length of the shock by removing the preload adjuster on sag as I am light and like soft suspension so I didn’t add any preload. The back is now 25 mm lower and I also removed the under seat rubber washers. The side stand is shortened by 25mm which is not quite enough. The seat is remodelled with a narrower front and softer memory foam. I can just flat foot at 5ft 7in and 29inch leg measurement. The handling is OK. If loading up for touring requires preload then I need a proper shorter shock with an adjuster.

I have the same inside leg and am using the low seat with no rear preload and the front fork through by 3 rings can’t quite flat foot but close.

Yes if there is insufficient suspension movement left for 2 up touring i will need to get a shorter shock
